One morning while Willie (James Oscar William Matthew Waddell) was driving down the road, he saw a young woman
out in a field. She was plowing the corn with a horse drawn plow. She had
on a skirt that reached her shoe tops and it was wet to her waist from the
dew off the corn. He stopped and spoke to the woman. Her name was Docia
Absher Gambil; She was a widow. Before long, he was courting her and
married her soon after.
Docia was a sweet person who couldn't stand for anyone to be mad at her.
If this happened, she couldn't sleep until she made it right.
Docia developed a hacking cough sometime after her youngest son Sherman
was born.
One spring day, Docia took her baby (Sherman) outside and sat on the
branch bank to watch Willie plow. After that she became much worse. The
doctor was called and the diagnosis was bad, the dreaded tuberculosis. Her
first husband had died from it as well.
