Ona Blaine (Quillen Adams) left us June 9, 2007. Her obituary is below.
Obituary of Ona Blaine Quillen Adams:
(also see
Mt Eagle Obituary)
Seneca said, "The day which we fear as our last is but the birth of
eternity. "Saturday, June 9, 2007 Ona Blaine Quillen Adams celebrated her
birth into a glorious life free of pain, sickness and physical limitations
after a life of (80) eighty years, (4) four months and (21) twenty-one days.
Ona was born January 19, 1927 to the late W. M. Quillen and Essie Blaine
Wright Quillen. It was a home built on a firm foundation of Christian
principles and love. These were the lessons instilled in her and her
brothers Cossie C Quillen, Dr. Samuel W. Quillen, Victor Quillen and an
infant brother Edsel Quillen all of whom preceded her in death.
On December 3, 1947, Ona Blaine (Quillen Adams) married the love of her
life, Robert Vernon Adams. In fifty-nine years of marriage, they shared
laughter, tears, joy and pride in the family they created. Ona taught her
children and grandchildren the same lessons she learned, serve God and those
around you, love everyone, cherish your family and always realize that in
all things, whether good or ill, you are blessed. They were lessons taught
in the life she lived. Even in one of the darkest times, the death of a
beloved son, Michael Lynn Adams on March 8, 1980 she taught us to hold firm
in faith and treasure the time we had.
Ona was a member of the Neon First church of God all of her life. In 1940,
she became a Christian and was baptized. She was more
than a church member. As Sunday School Secretary for more than 30 years, she
was keeper of records and dispenser of hugs to every
child who "brought in the book." As secretary to the Women of the Church of
God, she was historian of not just the ladies group,
but also the church as a whole.
For over thirty years, Ona worked as a beautician in both Harlan and Neon.
Then in the 1980's, she and Bob owned and operated the
Neon Rexall. Many of the FNHS students ate lunch daily with Bob and Ona and
have shared how special she made each of them feel.
Ona is survived by son Philip V. Adams (Kathy F Adams) of Neon, Linda Adams
Collins (James D. Collins) of Neon. She is also
survived by the pride and joys of her life, five grandchildren, Allison R.
Adams, Jonathan D. Adams, Robert K. Collins, S. Stamper Collins, all of Neon
and Michael A. Adams (Heather) of Fort Campbell, Kentucky. In addition she
is survived by nephews Sam Quillen (Anna), Scooter Quillen (Brenda). J. V.
Quillen (Annie) and nieces Leslie Williams (Dennis), Nina Faye Selvage and
Nelda Gay Johnson (Robert), a church family she dearly loved and a host of
other family and friends who will miss her.

Robert (Vernon Adams) left us to join Ona Blaine (Quillen Adams) August 30
2007. His obituary is below.
Obituary Robert "Bob" Vernon
Adams: It has been said, "Life is eternal, and love is immortal, and
death is only a horizon; and a horizon is nothing save the limit of our
sight." On Friday, August 30, 2007, Robert Vernon Adams moved beyond our
sight and into the presence of God at the age of 80 years, 9 months and 7
days.
Robert was born November 21, 1926 to the late Louie Gibson Adams and Kelsey
G. Adams of Cowan. when Bob was just a few months old, his mother became ill
and passed away. He then lived with his paternal grandparents, Will and
Loretta Adams of Cowan.
In 1944, slightly before his 18th birthday, Bob joined the Navy and served
during the Second World War, stationed at Pearl Harbor. Following the war,
Bob returned to Letcher County and began working at the A & P in Neon. On
day, he spotted a beautiful young woman, and asked his friend, Ruddell
Penny, the beauty's name. He told his friend, "I may not be able to say her
name, but I am going to marry her." True to his word, Bob and Ona Blaine
Quillen Adams were married on December 3, 1947 and spent almost 60 wonderful
years together before Ona's passing in June of 2007. It was a life of love
and laughter tempered with sorrow by the loss of their son, Michael Lynn, in
March of 1980. A brother, Kelsey Ray Adams and sister Alice Mae Adams
preceded Bob in death.
Bob was a man of many careers. He worked as manager of the A & P in both
Neon and Harlan for many year before retiring in 1972. Then he began working
in the Quillen Rexalls in both Whitesburg and neon before he and Ona
purchased the Drug Store in Neon. Bob and Ona made many lunch time memories
for Fleming-Neon High School students. After selling the drug Store in early
1980's Bob began his third career working at Rowlette's Shopwise. He took
great pleasure and pride in his produce department. When a greenhouse was
added. Bob's passion for gardening was evident in the abundance of flowers
and plants he ad God were able to produce.
Service was a lesson Bob taught his children through action. Bob was an
active member of the Neon Volunteer Fire Department and later served on the
board of Directors. He was also very active in the Neon Community Lions
Club. His years of service include holding many offices and serving a
committee chair for the Eye Glass project. Even as his lungs began to fail,
Bob would be at the Lions Club tent taking money at their annual fish Fry
during Neon Days.
Bob was a member of the Neon First Church of God and was baptized on October
20, 1963. Bob was a great encourager to all those who sang, taught or served
the church and the Lord.
Bob is survived by son Philip V Adams (Kathy) of Neon and Linda Adams
Collins (James D) also of Neon. His pride and joy were his grandchildren:
Allison R Adams, Jonathan D. Adams, Robert K. Collins, and S. Stamper
Collins all of Neon and Michael A. Adams (Heather) of Fort Campbell,
Kentucky. Those who also mourn his loss are sisters Deloers Adams and
Lorinda Grubbs (Jerry) of Lincoln Park, Michigan, Violetta Adams of
Pikeville, Nephews Dr. Sam W. Quillen (Anna), Cossie "Scooter" Quillen
(Brenda) and niece Lesley Quillen Williams (Dennis). He will be deeply
missed by a beloved church family and a host of other relatives, friends and
neighbors.
