OBITUARY OF VALENTINE JOHN AKERS
30 November 1826 - 30 January 1906
From the minutes of the Eighty-First Annual Meeting of the New Salem Association
of Old Regular Baptist,
September 21 and 22, 1906
By request of friends I will try, in my weakness, to write a short sketch of the life of old Brother Valentine Akers, better known by the name of John Akers. He was born October 20, 1826, died January 30, 1906, aged 79 years, 3 months and 10 days. He was married to Hannah Blankenship about the year 1848, and unto them was born 7 children, 4 boys and 3 girls. Three boys and one girl are yet living to mourn their loss. He lost his first wife and married Milly Hamilton February 22,1871. Unto them was born 5 children, and all of them are dead. He joined the Regular Baptist at the Samaria church soon after it was organized in the year of 1888. Him and his wife, Sister Milly Akers, lifted their letters and laid them in Enterprise church, August 3, 1893, where he remained a true member until his death. He was a good scriptorian, he did like to read the Bible and talk of Heavenly things. A few days before his death he called for a pencil and paper and wrote these words: "Bro. Thomas Hopkins, I want you and Bro. John Akers and Bro. Louis Bryant to preach my funeral. I hope the Lord will fill all with the power of the Holy Ghost, that your voices will ring on the mountains like bells and the leaves on the trees may quiver over your heads, and it may be a day long remembered," and signed his name, Valentine Akers. He give the writing to his companion and told her to give it to Bro. Thomas Hopkins. I was blest to be at his funeral and hear the three brethren preach according to his request. We hope the widow and children will remember that day and ever be thinking of meeting father around the throne of God, where they will be made able to sing the song of Moses and the Lamb in that home, sweet home in Heaven, is the sincere desire of the writer.
