Mary Ann Clark

Mary's parents died when their six children were all young. Since Mr Clark was a Free Mason, all the children except John went to the Free Masons Home for Widows and Orphans in Louisville, Ky. Mary, second oldest of the children, her sister Alice, Rebecca and Elizabeth (twins), and brother James went to the home. After spending several years in the home, James decided to leave after one of his vacations and never went back. The rest of the children remained at the home until they were of age. Mary, being the oldest, was released first and got a teachers certificate. She taught at a district school at Dwale, Ky. Jackson Begley, her husband, taught school from the time he was 19 until the Spanish-American war broke out, at which time he and three of his brothers volunteered and served for several months in the 4th Kentucky Regiment until the war was over when he went back to teaching.


2225. Theodore Roosevelt Begley

Ted worked at the Chamber of Commerce Building in Cincinnati, Oh. for several years after leaving the farm.


2228. Jackson Allen Begley , Jr.

Jacks wife, "Nikkie" was a registered nurse working in the Navy Nurse Corps at Great Lakes, Il. Jack was a pharmacist mate, 3rd class, in the Navy. They met and after a whirlwind courtship were married. During WWII, Jack sailed into Japanese waters in a submarine and received a Presidential Citation for his heroic actions on the USS Haddock. He served part of his hitch, (1948) in Pearl Harbor, working in the medical dept.


2229. Grace Evelyn Begley

Grace died at birth and is buried in the Mayo Cemetery at Allen, Ky.


732. Albert Begley

Veteran of the Spanish-American War of the 4th Kentucky Regiment. Was a nurse in the Medical Corps at Anniston, Al., until he was discharged because of bad health.
