Claborn Begley served in the US Army for several years and then enlisted in the US Navy, where he served for 20 years. He was serving on the USS Reuben James when it was sunk. He was one of the last men to leave the ship as it sank.
He was discharged from the Navy in 1946, and purchased a farm near Salem, Indiana, where he and his parents live.
