Services held for William F. Back Sr.
Former Letcher County resident William F. Back Sr., 72, of Wheatland, Calif., died March 10, 2008.  Born at Paintsville, he was a son of the late Custer and Ova Back and a grandson of the late William Riley Back. He was reared in Jenkins and the family later moved to Springfield, Ohio, then Sacramento, Calif.

Back attended Sacramento Junior College and American River College and earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from California State University, Long Beach. He retired as executive vice president of Aerojet, a defense contractor, where he developed and managed programs in the liquid rocket propulsion division.

After retiring, he was appointed to the Yuba County Planning Commission and became active in the Republican Party. He served of the GOP organizations in Yuba County and northern California and was a past vice chairman of the state Republican Party.  He was a member of St. Daniel Catholic Church in Wheatland, Calif., the National Rifle Association, and Ducks Unlimited.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara Reinl Back;a daughter, Diana Jane Grosser, Newcastle, Calif.; three sons, William F. Back Jr., Orangevale, Calif.; Larry Custer Back, Bella Vista, Calif.; and Robert Lee Jackson Back, Divide, Colo.; a brother, Kenneth Back, Mansfield, Ohio; a sister, Susan Holden, Spokane, Wash.; 16 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held March 14 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Marysville, CA
