Adam Linn

In the name of God Amen. I, Adam Linn, of Trigg County and the state of Kentucky, being in perfect mind and memory and knowing it is appointed for all men once to die, I do make and ordain this my last Will and Testement. First of all I recommend my soul to God who gave it and my body to the dust to be buried at the discretion of my Executor, doubting no but I shall receive the same again at the Resurrection of the Mighty power of God and for such wealth it has pleased God to bless me with in this life. I hereby dispose of my property in the following manner. After all my just debts are paid, it is my wish and pleasure that my wife, Sarah Linn have the rest of my old plantation for her life. The balance of my property to be equally divided among my then living children, giving each of my grandchildren two dollars. I appoint Joseph Linn, my Executor of the my last Will and Testement, revoking all other will of wills by me made. In witness, whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal this first day of February 1826.

102. William Baker

Graduate of Hampden-Sydney College. Virginia.
Was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

107. Abner J. Baker , Sr.

Was the first county clerk of Clay County in 1806. He was a early sheriff of Clay County in those early formation years.

Abner Baker, Great grandson of Robert Baker states in his "Life Book" that this family came to America and that three brothers, Samuel, Andrew, and Caleb were gunsmiths with a commission from the King of England to manufacture arms for the colonies. That they were gunsmiths is proven by court recorde in Pennsylvania also in North Carolina

Daniel Bates

Daniel was killed by Abner Baker brother of Daniel's wife Mary.

285. Almira Baker

Never married.

288. Abner J. Baker , Jr., Dr.

He was hung in Clay County, Kentucky, after shooting his sister's husband, Dan Bates in 1845.
It was Abner Baker Jr. who started the infamous Baker/Howard feud in Clay County, by killing Bates.
He was declared mentally incompetent to stand trial, later was re-tried and hung.
.............................................................................................................................
The Baker-White feud is credited as beginning in the 1840s with Abner Baker, Jr. shooting Daniel Bates. My direct ancestor, Col. John Hibbard, had even written a letter to Gov. Owsley about it. Here is the letter (spelling is as he wrote it):
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John Hibbard: Letter to Kentucky Governor William Owsley....
"Manchester, Clay County July 22, 1845....
To His Excellency William Owsley, Esq. Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

The undersigned respectfully represents to His Excellency that Abner Baker, Jr., who was indicted for the murder of Daniel Bates, has had a full and fair tryal (trial)....The court set for ten days....the prisoner had a jury of his own choice and time given to produce all the evidence that he wanted. I heard the trial and a more black hearted murder was never committed to my mind.

I understand that a petition will be presented to Your Excellency for a Pardon. Also, a remonstrance against his being pardoned. I can only say that I do not desire the blood of any human being. But the time has come in the county of Clay that an example should be set.

For many years past we have been without law and it is thought by many persons but a small think to kill a man. And if there ever was a fit subject to make an example of, it seames to me that Baker is the verry man.

For he has trampled the laws of both God and man under foot.

As so far as I have seen the remonstrance it is signed by citizens of Clay County of lawful age and good citizens. I have been told that the petition for his pardon is signed in some cases with women and children. I have not seen it.

I do hope the laws will once more be respected in Clay County. Notwithstanding Mr. Baker's high birth and great wealth, the law ought to make no distinction between the rich and poor.

The great body of people so far as I learn desire to see the laws faithfully executed. Nothing but a desire to see the laws should be faithfully sustained caused me to write this letter. I hope you will excuse the freedom I have taken in this hasty note.

I remain with high consideration your obedient and humble servant."

John Hibbard
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The letter was pulled out of a book at the Clay County Library in the Kentucky section.

Touching the Past" by Jerry Gregory is the name of the book that I was referring to at the Clay County Public Library, found on pgs. 249-250.

During the administratin the trial and execution at Manchester, ClayCounty, Kentucky, of Dr. Abner Baker for the murder of hisbrother-in-law, Daniel Bates, occurred. There was very great excitementnot only in Clay County, but also in the counties of Madison and Garrard,in which each of the parties had many relatives and friends; verystrenuous efforts were made by the friends of Dr. Baker to have himpardoned, which sfforts were as strenuously resisted by the friends ofMr. White, the Governor, however, declined to intercede. Fearing andffort at rescue, upon petition, the Governor, to prevent rescue andpreserve the peace and dignity of the State, called out the militia ofMadison County and placed General Miller in command thereof; and hemarshalled his forces and they marched to the scene of the apprehendedtrouble; it was considered a very responsible and difficult position. Heand his men were on duty several weeks at Manchester, remaining tillafter the execution.
