5617. George "Bad George" Barrett

Hanged in Indiana for killing a Federal Agent.

Connie, It jolly well be that this is the notorious Bad George Barrett that
filled Eastern Kentucky full of stolen jewelry and automobiles during t
1930. He killed his mother in Jackson County. Left the state and came back
to stand trial when his cousin was
Commonwealth Attorney. Was cleared the charge by claiming self defense.
Later killed a gman in College Corner, Indiana. Was hanged in Indianopolis
in 1936. Want a more detailed story give me a mailing address. He had served
some time in the army. Saw service in a skirmish with a bandit in Mexico
just before World War I. Said he joined the army to learn to fight. J.
Edgar Hoover said he was the meanest man he ever knew.
Jess Wilson

Hung for killing an FBI agent.
Note:
He was acquitted of killing his mother and sister and he evidently wasn't charged with killing his cousin, s/o Lucinda. Thief and all around bad guy, but had good descendants, so he must not have been all bad for him to marry well. Killed 6 people that were known of.

Cousins,

I thought that you would find this information interesting. George Barrett was my second cousin, through Lucinda Baker b 1839; m 1st, John D. Bowling b 1830. (He was the son of William Bolling and Deborah Duff, my GG grand parents.) Their daughter, Nancy Bowling b 1859; d 1930; m William G. Barrett b 1849. Nancy Bowling was shot and killed by her son, George Barrett, during a family argument in Jackson Co., KY. George Barrett was found guilty for killing an FBI agent and was hanged in 1936. He also shot and killed his Mother and also his sister, Rachel, during one of his battles with a brother-in-law, where he lost an eye from a gun shot wound and wore a glass eye after the incident.

This is a part of my Bowling family history that I really only found out about last year. This is not a boring family, that's for sure!

I hope this answers some of your questions regarding George Barrett. If anyone has any more information, please let me know. Thanks!

Love, Cousin Ruth

Joel and Tom, The "Bad" George Barrett that I am talking about was a son of Nan Bowling and William Barrett. He was in the army before WW1, fighting bandits on the Mexico border. Some say he joined the army for the experience in fighting. I don`t know where he was born but his widow mother lived in Northern Jackson County, near Big Hill. In his travels and trafficing in stolen auto and jewelry he often came into mountain counties on County Court days with a trunk full of gold watches and other jewelry. He would open the trunk and sell them at what ever he could.
He was a very pleasant man to meet. He had lots of friends. Some say that a local banker let him store some of his ware in the bank`s vault. From what I have been told he could have been governor if he had persued that field of endeavor.
Nan Bowling-Barrett was a granddaughter of Boston Baker. George fathered a boy that he brought to live with his moeher. They quarreled about Nan wnhhipping the boy. Following a quarrel George went out and got a pistol out of his car. When he returned, Nan was behind the door. She attacked him with a piece of stove wood. The sister joined the fight. He shot his mother and killed her. A shot at the sister as she ran and escaped on the running board of the mail truck wounded her so that she died shortly there after. I was once shown their graves.
