Uriah M. Hudson

1 NAME Uriah M. /Hutson/

407. Elisha H. Harrison , Jr.

1 NAME Elisha /Harrison/

Elisha and his brother Thomas married sisters, Delilah and Lucinda Lakes. Elisha lived where Berea Hospital is now located. He donated some of the land that Berea College is built on. He signed the Constitution of the College and served as trustee for 27 years until 1886. He was also on the Credulent Committee and served from its origin until 1869.

I have been told stories about Elisha that have not been proven. Such as:
Elisha Jr. visited his cousin, President Benjamin Harrison, to ask for money for Berea College. It was said that he was the third cousin with President William Henry Harrison. (Research has failed to show any connection).

Elisha Jr. attended the inauguration of Abraham Lincoln because they were cousins, If this were true Elisha may be a grandson of Jeremiah Harrison of Rockingham County, Virginia. I was also told that Lincoln"s maternal grandmother was a Harrison. (This needs more research to prove).

During the Civil War Berea College was closed. The college supported the abolition of slavery and allowed black students to attend along with white students. Pro slavery factions in Madison County, threatened anyone who supported the college and forced it to close.

John A. R. Roger's book, The Birth of Berea College, page 90 says:

The young people who remained, like Rawlings, Burdetts, Harrisons, and others of that sturdy class, unmoved by prejudice, in after years brought honor to themselves, their college and their country. Those who braved reproach, even if few, were worth a whole army of those who drifted with public opinion.

During the Civil War the black students from Berea went to McKee in Jackson County, and stayed through out the war. George Candee wanted to start a college in Jackson County,. On February 21, 1861 he filed a Constitution or Articles of Agreement of Penial College in the Jackson County, Court Clerk's office. Parties to the agreement were: Miss M. C. Pratt, a school teacher from Boston, and local citizens such as Robert Nichols, Robert Jones, L. J. Robinson, William Blanton, Morgan Faubus, Elisha Harrison, Isaac Fowler, I. L. H. Young, Hardin Cox, Smos Metcalf, and William Moberly of Laurel County,. The War ended in 1865 and the college was never built. Berea College reopened.

1242. Elizabeth Harrison

Elizabeth graduated from Brea Academy in 1867. She never married.

1247. David Preston Harrison

David choked on corn and died.

Sarah "Sally" Ann Gabbard

1 NAME Sally Ann /Gabbard/

409. William Canady "Bill" Harrison

William was in a feud over property boundaries in McKee and a man was killed. William's gun was found. Elisha Jr. told Thomas they needed to get William "Bill" out of the County, before he got killed. They took him to the Ozarks somewhere between 1867 and 1870. His descendents live in Arkansas or Missouri. The feud ended in 1906.

Wick Lainhart told me (Brenda) he could remember an old log cabin that had belonged to William "Bill". It sat next to the creek at the mouth of Bill's Branch. Wick said the cabin had holes all over it from shots that were fired during the feud.

Information on William came to me (Brenda) from Kathleen Elaine Harrison Harrell in Modesto, California. She got the information from David B. Bunton in Russell, Arkansas. Kathleen's ancestors: George Candee Harrison and Sally Baker had a son named Benjamin Franklin Harrison who had a son named Clarence Eugene, who had Kathleen.
