And this is what we can add from the marriage records:
Andrew Baker b. 1830 in Kentucky. [His 2nd m. in 1884]
Thomas Baker b. 1832 in Wise Co, VA [His 2nd m. in 1861]
E. D. [Edward] Baker b. 1837 in Letcher Co, Kentucky [1st m. in 1860]
L. Matilda Baker b. 1840 in Russell Co, VA [1st m. in 1860]
Elizabeth E. Baker b. 1843 in Floyd Co, Kentucky [1st m. in 1860]
Even though Wise County and Letcher County do not exist at the date of
Thomas and Edward's births, they are formed by the date of their
marriages. This is very interesting that they are being so specific
about where they were born. And then, Wise is right across the line
from Letcher where the Pollys are living. So since Elijah's last
record was on the 1830 Perry Co Ky census, he has moved over the line
by 1832 and back again by 1837. Elijah seems to have gone over the
line into Perry Co, Kentucky only very temporarily and he has no family ties
to this area..

Sarah "Sally" Polly

1 NAME Sarah /Polly/

It should be noted that most do not consider that Sarah married Daniel, but instead married Elijah Baker.

472. James Walter "Woods" Baker

These notes were taken from the Kentucky EXPLORER, Volume 14, #10 - April, 2000. By lewis G. Baker, 192 hawk Drive, Covington, KY 41018.

My great-great grandfather, James W. Baker, was married to three women named Sarah, and had two children by a fourth. The purpose of this story isn't to exploit Grandpa Jim's character, but to correct some information on him in many Kentucky libraries, historical societies, a few books, and many personal records.

James was a school teacher, a magistrate, surveyor, and owned a water grist mill. He was the leader of Upper Indian Creek.
He boutht up most of the land and he gave all of his 14 children farms. He was around 6 feet 3 inches tall. All seven of his sons were over 6 feet tall.

After 27 years of marriage and 10 children, he divorced his wife. He then married Andy's (his son) mother-in-law, Sarah Eversole, widow of John H Amis. He moved her to a Breathitte County farm, but in a little over two years he was back on Grassy Creek; almost in sight of his first wife. Sarah number two had two Amis children not old enough to marry. Later they married two of Jim Bakers children, making three sets of what people call double first cousins.

Jim and Sarah (Eversole) Amis had two sons, Steve and Walter. Before they were grown, Jim left Sarah, but did not divorce her.
He built himself a cabin on Egypt Flat. It wasn't long before Sarah number three was living with him. She was Sarah (Sal Ann) Cornette, a young woman with a baby daughter named Callie Huff. He never did marrie Sal Ann, but they had two children, Carter and Sythie. Before they were grown, Jim left and went to his son, Joe's house.

When his second wife died, she was burried on Cow Creek beside her father, Billy Eversole. James was now a single man in his seventies. He later married Sarah number four. She (Sis) Combs, the widow of Dan Hill. Sis was also in her 70s. She died around 1913. James was in poor health and almost blind, went to live with his son, Andy. Jim died in April of 1916 at the age of 86. He is burried in the James Baker Cemetary on Grassy Creek, beside his mother, Levina Woods. She was the daughter of Sam Woods, Jr. and Rebecca Wilson. His first wife is burried on the other side of Levina.

Sarah "Sally" (Amis) Eversole

1 NAME Sally /Eversole/

Sarah lived with Stephen, her son, and told of living with her grandma Bolling who owned two slaves and other stories about little things that happened there. When the Civil War was over and slaves were freed these slaves didn't want to leave their Bolling home so they were given a cabin to themselves, a carriage and things to keep house with.

Sarah was a Faith Healer. She had the gift of healing prayer. Out of ignorance folks called her a "Charm Doctor". She said, "All I do is pray, what some people don't understand has to be 'magic' you know". This story is told by her granddaughter, HAZEL BAKER.

Justina, Hazel's mother said that she had heard the stories but it was not until Sally came to spend her last years in their home that she had any first-hand knowledge of the healing.

One morning Justina was getting breakfast, a man rode his horse into the yard. He had traveled the mountain roads all night, his horse was exhausted. He told Justina his baby was dying with a tumor on its head. The doctors were no help. Sarah was not up yet but she overheard his story. She got up and came through the kitchen, didn't say a word, but went outside to a little evergreen tree which was her place of prayer. When she came in she told the man, "I have, 'doctored on your baby', so you can go back home but don't take it to your doctor. I tell people the patient may get worse before they get better". She also told him to let her know, whenever he could, about the child. Before he got home the child had spasms but began to heal and the tumor disappeared. Justina said, "That made a believer out of me". Sarah died of a stroke.
Information from Kay Boshoven, granddaughter of Hazel Baker Reinhart.

Sarah Eversole was in the 1860 census, Breathitt County, Kentucky.

and Blevins line. Witnesses: ELIJAH BAKER, Robert Parsons. Samuel
Baker bound himself to make a deed. In 1868, Isaac (x) Baker assigned
the "within bond" to John Rupe. The title bond proved June term 1870.
[Anne C. Collin's note: My theory is that the Elijah who witnessed
this deed was Elijah s/o Rev. Andrew, and that Samuel and Isaac were
his sons. Just a theory! Note that the other witness was Robert
Parsons, Samuel's father-in-law. This is the only deed mentioning an
Isaac Baker that I have found in Ashe or Grayson.]
