Robert "Red Bob" Baker

Leading Moonshine Distiller of Eastern Kentucky for 30 years.

Here is an article from an old paper that Sherry posted some time ago. He is indeed the famous Bootlegger that Clark wrote about.
Joel Meyers
From the Steuben Herald, Ohio 1897
"About the time of Harris Bramlett's capture by Bates, old "Red Bob" Baker, who has been the leading moonshine distiller of eastern Kentucky for 30 years, was taken into camp by Revenue Agent J.W. Colyer.

When taken, Baker's clothes were spattered with beer and mash, and the evidence against him is so strong that he will not be able to thwart justice this time. He has been arrested six times before, charged with moonshine, but the government has been unable to prove him guilty. He is about 60 years old, and his wife, who is known as Coon Baker, is five years his senior. They both have remarkable records as moonshiners. They were under guard, but the wife escaped and remained in hiding in the mountains for five months. It was she who disposed of the whiskey after Red Bob had made it, and she managed that end of the business so well that none of her family has ever been convicted. Their sons, Henry and Abner have been arrested several times for moonshining and selling moonshine whiskey, but each time the government failed to make a case.
