BATES, MARTIN VAN BUREN, born March 14, 1905 to the late B. Bates and Lillie Chambers Bates in Means, Kentucky (Menifee County). He died January 3, 2007 at Meadowood Care Center in Georgetown, Ohio at the age of 101.  

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 plus years, Helen Ruth Kanzleiter Bates in 199, and a granddaughter, Deborah (Debbie) Lynn Inskeep of Beavercreek, Ohio.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and the following siblings, Beulah Bates Lovely, Henderson B. Bates, John Bunyan Bates, who died in W.W. II. Woodrow Wilson Bates, Robert Lee Bates, Beatrice Bates Green, B. Bates Jr., and Belva Clay Bates Chamberlain.

He is survived by his only Child, Mrs. Joanne Bates Inskeep and her husband Wendell F. Inskeep of Beavercreek, Ohio, and two Grandchildren, David Inskeep and his wife Gwen and their children, Lt. Jason Inskeep, who is in Iraq, serving in the armed forces, and his wife Nicky and their daughter, Kjersten, and Joel Inskeep and Jonathon Inskeep, all of Hastings, Minnesota.

Also by Suellen Inskeep Warren and her husband John and their son, Jamison and his son, Nathan, all of Beavercreek, Ohio.

Martin served in the U.S. Army in foreign service in Hawaii territory in 1925.

Martin was associated with the Kroger Company for 19 years as a District Manager, and then he opened his own General Store in Russellville, Ohio for 3 years before going into the Real Estate Business in Russellville and Georgetown, Ohio for over 35 years before retiring. He made many friends in the Business.

Martin was a member of the Cincinnati Primitive Baptist Church and always enjoyed going to Church.  

He was a charter member of the Brown County Chamber of Commerce, The Ohio Society Club of Cincinnati, The Order of Kentucky Colonels, and was a member of the Russellville Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite for many years and was on the Board of the Brown County General Hospital Foundation.

He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and a host of other dear friends, far and wide.

Martin never met a stranger.

Visitation will be Sunday, January 7 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Meeker Funeral Home in Russellville, and services will be held on Monday, January 8, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of Christ in Russellville, Ohio, and burial to follow in the Linwood Cemetery in Russellville.
