Obituary of J H Bentley

Bentley, J. H. It is with a sad and lonesome heart that I will try to write an obituary of my beloved grandfather, J. H. Bentley. He was born March 2, 1863 and died November 23, 1940, being 77 years old. He was married to Mary L. Mullins February 10, 1883 and to this union were born twelve children, six girls and six boys, one of whom died in infancy. He never joined the church but professed a hope on his death bed. He always put his faith in the Old Regular Baptist Church. He said he wanted them to preach over him. he called his wife, Mary to bedside on Tuesday before he died on Saturday and told her that the Lord had come and took all of his sins away. He said he didn't want to get well and that the Lord had nothing against him and that he was ready to go home. He told all the boys to be good and live better, he told Martin Bentley, his son-in-law that all he wanted was his loving Savior. He told his daughter, Anna Beel, that all he hated about dying was leaving his children. He told his daughter, Martha Jane, that all he needed was his loving Savior. Our home is sad and lonely, while grief will fill out hearts, we hope to meet dear father in Heaven and never part. Written by his granddaughter, Miss Maggie Belcher

Obituary of Lizzie Bentley Mullins

Mullins, Lizzie It is with a sad and aching heart I try to write an obituary of my daughter, Lizzie Mullins, daughter of Jasper and Anna Bell Belcher. She was born November 18, 1910 and departed this life October 4, 1940 being 29 years, 10 months and 14 days old. She was married to Hassell Mullins February 2, 1929 and to them were born five children, four girls and one boys. She leaves husband, five children, father, mother, six brothers and two sisters and a host of friends to mourn her loss. She joined the Old Regular Baptist Church of Elkhorn. The day she joined the church whish was March 10, 1940 she came to her fathers home and asked for her father, I told her he was gone and asked her what she wanted with him. She said that she wanted him to join the church. Her aunt Sarah came in and we told her and she clapped her hands with joy. She was baptized on Easter Sunday, March 24, by Brother Richmond Stanley and Brother Dave L. Baker. She told us she wanted to hear Brother Ballard Baker pray again before she died. She was sick about two years before her death. We took her to the hospital and different doctors but they couldn't do anything for her. She said, Mama, I can do anything but go home, get on my knees and pray as long as I love. She was never able to go to church so we had church in our home to comfort her. A few days before she died, she said her suffering would soon be over. The morning she died she said, Mama, death has struck me. She asked us to go home with her. She said, If you can't go now, you all come. In seven weeks after her death her grandfather, J.H. Bentley followed her. Written by her mother Anna Bell Belcher

Obituary of Annie Belle Bentley Belcher

BELCHER, ANNIE BELLE BENTLEY - I hope and pray that the Lord will be my guide as I try with a sad and lonesome heart to write an obituary of our dear mother, Annie Belle Bentley Belcher. She was born April 3, 1893, and departed this life November 26, 1960, at the age of 67 years 7 months and 23 days. She was born in Letcher County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of the late John H. and Mary Elizabeth Mullins Bentley. She was married to Jasper Belcher July 22, 1909, who is left to mourn her passing. Also, six sons: Arland, Roy, Homer, Edward, Jonah, and Russell Belcher, and two daughters, Mrs. Maggie Bentley and Mrs. Frankie Lowe. Two daughters, Mrs. Lizzie Mullins and Martha Jane Belcher preceded her in death. Mother leaves two brothers and four sisters, twenty one grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends. Mother joined the Old Regular Baptist Church the first Sunday in May. She took her membership to the Old Elkhorn Church and was baptized the fourth Sunday in May 1941 by the Reverend Boyd Smallwood and Reverend Noah Lucas and her hand to the Elder Bennett Adams and told a wonderful experience. She faithfully filled her seat in the church until death. She always prepared to feed her brethrens and sisters when they visited her. Mother took sick on Monday morning about 6:30. We rushed her to the Jenkins Hospital where we were told she has suffered a heart attack. She told the Dr. when she learned of her condition that, When the good Lord calls me I'm ready to go. We believed that Mother has just exchanged this old world of trouble to a home of peace and rest, but the loss of her is so hard to bear. She lived five days after taking sick before the Lord called her peacefully in her sleep. All of her children were blessed to be with her until death. She bore her sickness with patience and faith in God who had saved her and kept her to live a Christian life before her children and her friends. We believe Mother was warned of her death for a short while before her death. She told Inas Castle that she didn't believe she was going to live long and when she died she would die of a heart attack. She also told Reverend Sexton when she ate dinner at his home about a month before her death that she wanted him to preach in her funeral and give her children good counseling and tell them that Mother has gone to rest. The night before she took sick Daddy dreamed of her taking sick and dying and of them praying together. All of the dream was fulfilled. She told us as we were helping her out to the truck that morning that she didn't believe she was going to live. She loved the church and called it her home. Her seat is now vacant, her voice is still but the memory of her still lives in the minds of her brethrens and sisters. Mother had many trials and tribulations in this world but by the humble life she lived here we believe she is resting from all of her labor. I believe our loss is her eternal gain. Her prayers and desire were for her children to go to church and to love each other and be good to every body. We have lost a good Mother, the church a good sister, the community a good neighbor, but our loss is small compared to the glory she is resting in where she knows nothing of the troubles of this old world. The children thought when Mother died it would kill daddy, but by the Grace of God and the mind of the children they can all be reunited with Mother some sweet day where parting will be no more and all will be peace and love.
