CLINTWOOD -- Hillard Blankenship Sr., 69, of Route 1, passed away at the Dickenson County Medical Center on April 29, 2002. Born in Kentucky, a son of the late Jarvie and Lizzie Blankenship, he was a musician and a former bus driver for Dr. Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Revie Mullins and Lexie Owens.
Survivors include his wife, Opal Mullins; one son, Hillard Blankenship Jr., Clintwood; one brother, Earl Blankenship, Haysi; one sister, Gilvie Dingus, Clintwood; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, May 2, 2002, at Haysi Funeral Home with Darrell Milgrim and Jerry Vitatoe. Burial will follow in the Owens Cemetery, Route 1, Haysi, Va. Pallbearers will be Greg Edwards, Lacy Edwards, Junior Edwards, David Blankenship, Rodney Davis and Cody Ireson. Honorary pallbearers will be Carlie Jean Mullins, George Mullins, K.J. Mullins, Cline Edwards, Larry Owens and Dr. Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys. The family will receive friends at Haysi Funeral Home after 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday with services at 7 p.m. both nights.
