About 1814, he moved to Perry County, KY where he lived and raised his family, untile very shortly before his death at the home of a relative in Sullivan County, TN, where he was visting. He died one night, in his sleep. One statement that can be made about Robert is that he accumulated aa considerable quantity of worldly goods in an area where, in his day, financial success was very difficult to attain. He started as a pack peddler in the hills of Eastern Kentucky and got to know most of the folks in the hills. Shortly after he moved to Perry County he became active as a successful politician and businessman. He was selected as one of the five trustees to lay out Perry County's seat of government, the town of Hazard. Other offices he held were magistrate (1822), sheriff (1825), state representative (1837) and judge of the probate court (1851). He also served as postmaster (1829) for Brashearville (now Cornettsville), Perry, KY. He also owned and operated a farm, general store, salt work (established in 1835) and bought and sold real estate. At death, his estate was valued in the thousands of dollars and he was considered one of the well-to-do in Perry County.
