When they married she must have been 14 or 15 years old and he was 42 or 43. She had a cancer on her hand and her grandson rode a horse from Boonville, Owsley Co, KY, to Breeding's Creek and took her hand off. He was Dr. Sam Breeding. Carl Breeding said he talked to two men who saw him perform the operation. They were Wesley Breeding and Jasper Hale. A cancer finally killed her. It came on the end of her nose. She made her home with her son George 'Pud' in 1880.

More about Elisha Breeding: It is generally believed Elisha Breeding married two Childress women who were sisters. When he married the 2nd he moved from Altrap, Russell Co, Va to what is now Knott Co, KY. They settled on a creek now known as Breeding's Creek. They came May 18, 1816. Elisha was 75 or 76 when the Confederate guerrillas of the Civil War came into his home and took him to the mouth of the shop hollow at the bottom of the hill between Knott and Letcher Counties, near where the Highway No. 15 crosses the hill. He was shot in the back, then the family was allowed to haul him home on a sled. The guerrillas took most of the family's food supplies. Elisha had thrown his picket book near a gate and it was later found. Per Carl Breeding, Charlestown, Indiana.

Elisha Breeding b 1788, married 1st to Miss Childress, who soon died, He then married her sister, Paulina Childress. They lived in Artrip, Russell Co, Virginia, until the spring of 1816, when they moved to the present Knott Co, KY, settling on a stream now called Breeding’s Creek. Paulina died in 1828 or 1829, and he married Malinda S. Stamper, a daughter of William and Emily "Polly" Stamper. At that time Elisha was over forty years old, while Malinda was fourteen - or maybe fifteen. Elisha seems to have been a lecherous old coot, and is said to have had three illegitimate children by incest with his own daughters.

When he was 75 years old, a Confederate-oriented guerrilla and visited the farm, confis-cated most of the family’s food supply, then took Elisha to a spot near the pass between Knott and Letcher Counties. On the way, Elisha was able to throw down his pocket-book near a gate, where it was later found. He was then shot in the back. Then the family was allowed to haul his body away in a sled, and they buried him on Breedings Creek, near his home.

Identity of the members of this band was known. They were: S. Sexton, A. Amburgey, Steve Sexton, Willy Moore, Francis Amburgey, Willey Amburgey and Ben Caudill. Elisha’s son John and his son-in-law Will Calhoun later led a group of men who killed every one of them except Willy Moore. Then three years later, another Elisha Breeding, a son of Elisha’s son Wesley, Killed Willy Moore, left home, and was never heard from again.

Malinda Stamper Breeding developed a cancer on her hand. Her grandson, Dr. Sam Breeding, rode horseback from Booneville, Owsley Co, KY, and took off her hand. Unfortunately, the cancer had spread, and eventually killed her. She died on May 18, 1894.

9 viii. Nancy Breeding. She b 16 Aug, 1841, and married Will Calhoun, a Civil War veteran. They lived on Breedings Creek.

10 x. Elizabeth Breeding, b April 7, 1845. She married John Combs. They lived at the mouth of Colly Creek, near Isom, KY.

11 xii. James H Breeding. b 26 Sept, 1849, and was married to Vina Cody, a daughter of Jahue Cody, and b on January 12, 1852. James was a farmer on Breedings Creek, also had a country store. Vina died on May 27, 1916, and James on May 8, 1924.

12 xiii. George "Pud" Breeding b on Sept 13, 1851. He married Rachel Amburgey, who b on January 9, 1854. He was a farmer and lived at his father’s original home place on Breedings Creek. George died on November 29, 1933, Rachel on Oct 15, 1940.

13 xiv. Mary Polly Breeding, b Sept 5, 1853, married Wesley Combs, b January 31, 1850. They lived on Smoot Creek, Letcher Co, KY. Polly died on Dec 3, 1909. Wesley died on Dec 22, 1924.

14 xv. Lucinda Breeding. b August 3, 1855, and married John Craft. They lived at the mouth of Daniel Branch of Rockhouse Creek in Letcher Co, then moved to Lewis Co, KY.

15 xvi. Matilda Breeding, b April 11, 1859, married William Penn Cody. Their place was on Sugar Branch of Breedings Creek, Knott Co, KY. Matilda died on April 21, 1886, but William lived until 1922.

I'll never forget the night, about midnight, when my dad answered the telephone, I could hear weeping through the receiver as he talked. He turned and said "Mother is dead." Our good grandmother had died of a heart attack. I was eight years old."

An old man approximately in his eighties, no children living, he gave the Masons his property at Breeding's Creek in exchange for them taking care of him in his old age. He came here to Shelbyville, KY, near Louisville and lived the remainder of his live at the Masonic Home. When on leave from the Air Force, I would go visit him. Later years sometimes he would recognize me, other times not. "As a young boy at Breeding's Creek, Uncle Wes treated me like a son. He gave me candy from his store, allowed me to roller skate free at his Roller Rink, let me watch the picture shows free on Saturday night. "I have about 4 or 5 typewritten pages of his life story. Carlice (Carl) Breeding, genealogist of the family, also visited him often in Shelbyville. Lonnie, wife of Carlice, author of several books, typed up his life story from many notes Uncle Wes had lying around. As a young man, he travelled out West, married, all his children died very young. He came back to Breeding's Creek without his wife. Don't know if they were divorced or what. He never married again. My Aunt told me he was very dangerous with his pistol. I guess he was a gunslinger. In his typewritten life story, he states that when he was a small boy, he played with the Indian children around, and that they used bow and arrows to shoot fish and that wild game was plentiful in those days."

Obituary - Della Breeding Ratliff, age 89, of Mousie, Kentucky, died Thursday, August 31, 2006, at Hazard ARH, Hazard, Kentucky. She was born March 7, 1917, the daughter of the late Rev. Samuel and Elizabeth Crase Breeding. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Fred Ratliff; two sons: Franklin D. Ratliff and one infant; one daughter: Deloras Meade; 12 brothers and sisters; one grandchild: Larry Jr. Ratliff. She is survived by one son: Larry (Rebecca) Ratliff of Ivel, Kentucky; one daughter: Mickie (Mike) Huff of Mousie, Kentucky; seven grandchildren: Gary, Steve, Patty, Michael, Mark, Angie and Amy; nine great-grandchildren; a host of family and friends. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, September 2, at 1 p.m., at Nelson Frazier Funeral Home, Hindman, Kentucky, with J.M. Sloce officiating. Burial followed in the Ratliff Cemetery, Kings Creek, Kentucky, under the direction of Nelson Frazier Funeral Home.
