George Burchett and Elizabeth Gossett who had ten children. By the way, I have his birth date as 12 July, 1812, which I copied from his grave stone. They both had been born in Ohio, according to family stories, and the Burchett's were Scotch-Irish, meaning they were descended from Scottish farmers, Presbyterians, who had been forcibly resettled in the Province of Ulster in the northern part of Ireland in the years following Oliver Cromwell's invasion of Ireland about 1645.

He married (1) Octavia (Onda) Wright July 07, 1855 in Des Moines County, Iowa, daughter of Levi Wright and Lydia Chapman. She was born April 03, 1836 in Ohio, and died April 02, 1875 in Adair County, Missouri. He married (2) Elizabeth (Daniels) Devold July 01, 1877 in Adair County, Missouri. She was born in Illinois.
Notes for Benjamin Burchett:
Benjamin Burchett and Onda Wright also had ten children, although not all lived past childhood. The first to live to adulthood was their second child, Lydia Ann. Lydia Ann Burchett married Elizur Wright Bishop. Now the interesting fact was that they were first cousins! Their mothers were sisters. Lydia's mother was Onda Wright, while Elizur's mother was Nancy Wright. Consequently, I can trace back to Levi Wright (born 1794) and Lydia Chapman (born 1796) through either Onda or Nancy. Now pay attention here. Another of the Bishop children (Elizur's sister, Lydia Bishop) married Benjamin Burchett's younger brother, George. So, what we have is Lydia Burchett marrying a Bishop, and Lydia Bishop marrying a Burchett. They sort of swapped names!
Bureau of Land Management-Eastern States-Land Patent Report states: Bemjamin Burchett of Adair Co., Missouri Doc. Nr.6873 bought 120 acres in Adair Co. on 8/1/1857 at Sec 33, Township 63-N, Range 17-W

Notes for Hiram Snyder:
From the History of Adair, Sullivan, Putnam and
Schuyler Counties, Missouri. Published 1888.
Hiram Snyder, farmer and stock
raiser, was born in Dauphin County, Penn., in 1832. He is the fourth of seven
children of John and Elizabeth (Cortsnitz) Snyder, natives of the same county,
and born in 1806. They were married about 1826, and in 1851 came to this county.
They settled in Liberty Township six years later, where the father died in 1883.
the mother still survives him. The father's employment was farming and
shoemaking. George the grandfather, was also a native of Dauphin County, and the
son of George Snyder Sr., a German. Our subject was reared in his native county
until the age of nineteen, with ordinary school advantages, and then came to
this county with his parents, and married Minerva, a daughter of T. Shaw, a
pioneer of Putnam County. They had seven children and those living are John W.,
Samuel T., George B., and Eliza (the wife of Justice Perigo, of Clark County).
The wife of Mr. Snyder died in 1864, and the folling year he married Mrs.
Elizabeth Wright, a dauther of George Burchett. Their children are Hester and
Mollie, twins, Onda, Ella, Phoebe,Cornelius, Talcut R., Ida, Richard M., Henry
and Emerella. After a time in Putnam County he came to Adair County, where he
has sence lived, excepting eighteen mounth in the former county. He has been on
his present farm since 1866. He first bought forty acres on credit and began
with two ponies and a wagon, but now owns an estate of 120 acres and two tracts
of eighty acres each. He purchased the first self-raking reaper, the second
mower, and now has the first and only self-binding harvester on the prairie.
Besides rearing fifteen children of his own, four step-children have also
received his care. He deals in shorthorn cattle, and also ships a great deal of
stock. He has served as justice of the peace for one term. In 1861 he enlisted
in the Home Guards, and served until the close of the war. He was reared a
Democrat, but since the war has been a Republican.

Notes for George * (Ot) Otto Burchett:
Glen Burchett shares this
information on his parents leaving Missouri for Montana.
Around the year
1914, Otto Burchett and Guy Bozarth (brothers-in-law) rode the train to Miles
City, Montana. There they bought a team of horses and wagon and headed north to
Snow Creek to homestead (about 33 miles NW of Jordan in the Missouri River
Breaks). Otto logged the trees and built a house near the homestead of George
Bozarth (an uncle of Fannie's). In the fall of that year Fannie and Lloyd came
to Montana by train. Otto met the train in Miles City, to pick up his wife and
young son and take them to their new home on Snow Creek. The nearest mail
station was at Butte Creek (about 10 miles away). Fannie often talked about not
seeing another woman for over a year an a haft. Lloyd was so scared when he saw
her he ran and hid under the bed. They sold the homestead in 1949 and moved to
Huntley, Montana, where they bought a small farm. Fannie and Otto retired from
farming in the middle 1960s.
Grandpa Burchett told me (Ron Engdahl), that he
left Missouri because he lost his first two sons to the wet weather in Missouri
and he didn't want to lose another one. During the twenties Ot ran a freight
line between Jordan and Miles City to keep his ranch going. It took close to two
weeks to make a round trip between Jordan and Miles City. As the homesteader
pulled out between Jordan and Miles City the men running the freight wagons
would use the wood from the shantys. They used the fence post for fire wood.
They finally rolled up the barbwire and used it on their own ranches. Ot and the
other farmers would get together in the winter time and haul their wheat to
Ingermyer, Mt. If they had good weather it would take two week to make the trip.
That was as close as the railroad came to them.
During the thirty Ot was
haft owner of the Floyd Saloon in Jordan. While he ran the Saloon, Ot and Fanny
lived in a house he bought in Jordan. Lloyd Burchett bought the house from Ot
and lived their until he Passed away.
Ot loved to tell stories but you had
to be careful, because he love to stretch the truth and he loved to argue about
politics and he didn't care which side he was on. Frank Miller tells of the time
he was over their having dinner and Ot started in and Frank didn't want to argue
pretty soon Ot had changed to the other side and Frank still wouldn't get
envolved. Ot stopped and said in frustration "God damit Frank doun't you know
anything."
In 1964 Gwen Burchett and myself were over at Ot's house and
asked him about his syster and brothers. He tore a page off the calendar and
started writing their names and birthdays down and their wives and then he wrote
down his uncles and aunts birthdays from memory. I still have it, they were all
correct..
Notes for Fannie * Jane Bozarth:
Glen's daughter, Gwen, shares this
information.
My grandmother (Fannie) often spoke of how she missed her
family in Missouri when they moved here. She wanted Otto to take her back. My
Dad (Glen) and his sister Ruby were born on the homestead in the house that Otto
built. Years later when Dad and Mom were married they lived in that same log
house and all of the children (Gwen, Georgie, Delmar and Margie were raised
there during our younger years. When the homestead was sold we all moved to
Huntley, Montana.
Fanny was noted for her quilts and had Ot make her a frame that was attached
to the ceiling in the living room. When she wanted to work on a quilt she just
pulled it down. The neighbor ladies would come over to her house and help her
make the quilts. They were always making quilts, someone aways needed a quilt.
When a quilt would become worn out they wouldn't throw them away Fanny would
make a new cover for them. I have a quilt she gave to me just after Marjouie and
myself, Ron Engdahl, were married that had been recoved.

Notes for Ruby * Jane Burchett:
Ruby was born in a log house that her
father (Otto) built. (About 33 miles NW of Jordan, Montana on Snow Creek. The
log house had a sod roof and everything was always covered with dirt. She
tells of sitting down to have soup and a mouse fell out of the ceiling and
landed in the soup. They always had to watch for rattlesnakes. They killed one
on their door step and another time Ruby tells of going out to use the outhouse
and a rattlesnake was inside the door. She went screaming back to the house and
her mother (Fannie) came out with a hoe and killed it.
Ruby Burchett
married Ken Engdahl in Miles City on January 6, 1934. Fannie Burchett, Ruby's
mother and Frank and Arleen (Engdahl) Miller, Ken's sister stood up for them.
Frank Miller was the son of Rosa Katherine (Bozarth), Fannie's sister. When she
married Ken Engdahl (known as Sonny at that time), they lived in the home she
was born in for two years. The house had two bedrooms and Glen Burchett had one
and they had the other. Ott and Fannie were living in Jordan at the time. Ken
tried farming for two years. The first year they had a drought and they just got
back their seed. The 2nd year the grasshoppers came in clouds, when they left
there was nothing left but bare ground. The next year they moved to Ft. Peck,
Montana, (The city they lived in was McCone City, about one mile below Ft. Peck
Dam, but it no longer exists), where Ken worked on the dam for four years. The
1st six months in McCone City they lived in a tent. They then bought a little
house. It didn't have running water and they used a stove from a sheep wagon to
heat it and cook with. They lived in McCone City until 1939 when they moved back
to Jordan. Ken moved their house back to Jordan with them. They bought a small
lot on the north side of Jordan. They lived there for about 6 months before
moving back to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1940. They lived with Al and Ollie
Engdahl for a month or two before getting a apartment in Minneapolis. They moved
to 6635 Freemont Ave. in Richfield, Minnesota in 1941. Their's a big
four-leaf-clover interchange there now. In 1946 they moved to 10708 Zenith Ave
So. in Bloomington, Minnesota. It was a two story house on four acres of land.
Around 1975 they bought a cabin on Lake Markee 25 miles north of Brainerd
Minnesota. They sold their home in Bloomington and moved up there after Ken
retired in about 1980. Where Ruby lived until she passed away on March 27, 1991.
Ruby went fishing almost every day in the summer and made Ken build her a
ice house so she could fish in the winter. Ruby and Ken loved to go to dances
and went dancing almost every Friday and Saturday night. Mother had to quit in
1990 when she had a knee replaced. Ruby loved to be around people and when she
moved up to the lake she told Ken she wasn't going to be a hermit. She belonged
to a flower club, a sewing club, the church, the ladies of the Moose and Eastern
Star. When they lived in Bloomington, Minnesota, Ken and Ruby belonged to a
square dance club. They were very good because their club would travel around
the Minneapolis area putting on shows. Ruby worked as head cook at one of the
grade schools in Bloomington for quite a few years, before moving up to the
lake.
Ruby is buried in the Pleasant View Memorial Gardens, a Cemetery
located on State Trunk Highway 13, between Lindale and Cedar Ave., Burnsville,
County of Dakota, State of Minnesota.
Notes for Kennith * Stanley Engdahl:
When Kennith was two year old his parents HOME STEADED in Jordan, Montana.
Their ranch was about 30 miles NW of Jordan on Hell Creek. Ken was known as
Sonny when he was growing up in Montana. He went to a one room log school house
called the Hell Creek School. He either walked or rode a horse to school. From
9th grade on he went to Garfield High School in Jordan, Montana. He stayed in
the dormitory, in Jordan, Montana, while going to high school. Ken liked to ride
horse's in the rodeo. He tried riding a bull one time it threw him and he never
remembered anything until after the dance that night and never road another one.
Glen Burchett told me ( Ron Engdahl) about one day when Ken and He were coming
home from Jordan in a Model A, when they saw a Antelope along side the rode, and
Ken wanted to catch it. Ken climbed out unto to the fender and Glen drove the
car along side the antelope and Ken tried to bulldog it. Dad landed on the
antelope their was a cloud of dust and the antelope kept going, Ken came out 2nd
best.
Ken worked as a sheepherder and broke horses to earn money while going
to high school.
Ken married Ruby Burchett in Miles City on January 6, 1934.
Fanny Burchett, Ruby's mother and Arleen Miller, Ken's sister stood up for them.
Ken and Ruby tried to farm for two years on the Burchett homestead, before
quitting and going to work on the Ft. Peck Dam. They lived in a shanty town
called McCone City. Its no longer there. It was about 1 mile North of the Dam on
the Missouri River.
Ken didn't have a car when they moved to Ft. Peck and
they had to live in a tent for 6 months. He was getting $15.00 dollars week. He
saved up enough money to buy a two room house with no running water or stove.
They used a stove out of a sheep wagon to cook and heat with. That was one of
the coldest winters in Montana, 1934-1935. It dropped to 60 below zero.
Everything in the house froze at night, when the fire went out. Ken bought a
Model A Ford before leaving Ft. Peck. Built a trailer bigger then the car that
he put all his belongings in when they left. It was the same car and trailer he
came back to Minneapolis with. Ken worked in Frank Miller's welding shop when he
came back to Minneapolis.
He worked there for about six months before going
to work for the Ford Motor Co. He worked as a Millwright in the shipyards in
Savage, Minnesota during the war. After the war he became a carpenter and that
was his trade until he retired. Ken and Ruby moved up to Brainerd Minnesota area
and lived on the west side of Markee lake, in Merrifield, Mn., in a cabin that
he had remodeled. Ruby passed away in 1991 and Ken lived by himself for five
years.
Ken moved to Helena Montana in 1996 to live with his son Ron Engdahl.
Ken is a member of the Masons and is a Past Master of King Solomon lodge 44
