Sylvanis Church, 90 of Ransom, Ky. passed away Monday morning, July 13, 2009 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Goldsboro, N.C. He was born October 24, 1918 in Pike County, Ky. the son of the late James Washington and Rebecca Jane Church. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Maynard Church, daughter, Sylvia Jean Tignor, grandson, Christopher Thacker, sister, Eula Roberts and brothers, Lewis, Joe, Garley, Newman, Delmar, Burl, Floyd and Truman Church. Sylvanis was a retired coal miner, a Veteran of the United States Army Air Force during World War II and a member of Belfry Chapter #141 D.A.V. He also attended the Leckieville Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Garrett (Subrina) Church of Fremont, N.C.; one brother, Chester (Ada) Church of Ransom, Ky.; two sisters, Mary Alice Cook of Pinsonfork, Ky. and Pearlie Maynard of Gleason, Tn.; five grandchildren, Sylvanis "Buck" (Barbara) Church, Rebecca and Maggie Church, James Thacker and Terrance "Terry" (Georgina) Thacker and five great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Friday, July 17, 2009 at the Leckieville Freewill Baptist Church with Lonnie Francis officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Ky. Visitation will be held at the Church after 6 PM Wednesday and Thursday with special services Wednesday at 7 PM with Emery Varney and Floyd Church Jr. and Thursday night at 7 Pm with Lee Dotson Jr. Pallbearers will be Buck Church, James and Terry Thacker, Bobby and Eddie Church and Timmy Cook.
