Here is what Joella Craft Collier wrote in her book, A Family Called Craft, pg. 30: “James was born before 1794, in Floyd Co KY, he married Drusilla Hammons, daughter of Joseph Hammons, who was born about 1790 and died 12 January 1867. James purchased a Kentucky land warrant on 24 February 1821 on the North Fork KY River and appears on the Perry/Letcher tax lists from 1821-1849. In the 1830-1840 censuses for Perry Co the James Craft family appears; however, in the 1850 Letcher Co census Drusilla is listed as head of household and a widow. It is thought that James left his family, for he died in Wayne Co KY in December 1879, having been a resident of that Co but two years. There were a James and a John Craft in Cumberland Co (not far from Wayne) in the 1840 census. Were they our James and John? At this point we have no documentation. One family member relates that on one occasion, a son of James met his father on the road, and the son refused to acknowledge his father’s presence.” More About DRUCILLA HAMMONS: Census: 1850, Letcher Co KY, listed as head of household, where was James? Notes for JAMES W. CAUDILL: From Anthony "Tony" Blair's research: During the Civil War soldiers came to their home in search of food. They scaled the fence surrounding the hen house, raided the hen's nests, and ate the eggs raw. They searched the house for more food, looking everywhere that food could be hidden, even in clothes hanging from pegs on the wall. Then the soldiers took five large pieces of meat out of the smoke house, rammed their rifle bayonnets through the meat, slung their rifles over their shoulders, and left.
