Soloman Lane

Scott Co census: 1820 (100100-10010-01), 1850 (#1078, 8 ch present),
1860 (#1228).
Greene Co census: 1840 (1022101-120011)
A copy of the marriage contractis reproduced in Fannie Steele's book
(p. 59) and Ed Nickels gave me a copy.It is very difficult to read
Sofia's name - it appears to be "Sotia F. Polys" with the P
overwritten. If you are looking for Estep, it can be interpretedas
such. The security was by Soloman Lane, William Lane (assumed father
ofSoloman) and Samuel Estep (father of Sofia). All signers used an
"his x mark."
Soloman's parents are difficult to determine. Most records have
suggestedthat he was the son of Dutton, but the close association
with Benjamin's andWilliam's family cause William to be more likely
his father. William would have probably been in Greene Co in 1795
which would explain Soloman's returning there for a few years. Being a
son of William would also make his wife hissecond cousin which was
common at that time.
The marriage contract is evidence that Soloman was the son of William
instead of Dutton. William's age is such that Soloman could have been
his oldest son. The fact that Soloman's oldest son was named Dutton
supports Soloman's father being Dutton.
Soloman witnessed the sale of land from Dutton Lane to Benjamin Lane
in 1828.
The marriage was mistakedly not recorded in Marriage Book 1 but was
recorded in a returnby Robert Kilgore and is in a box of loose
documents in the Courthouse atticroom. Marriage date was 2 Oct 1816.

6. Rachel Estep

First marriage from Guy Sanders. His grandmother had told him that
Rachel Estep was her ancestor who married John or William Sanders.
Rachel's husband mayhave been killed early though, and she raised the
children.
Further research by Guy Sanders indicated that Rachel died before
1820. She may have had a child, but it has not been identified. This
is also debatable since other records show she married Miles Ervin and
went to MO.
Guy's family is descended from Jane Starns.
Scott Co Marriage Records 1-4.
Further information and descendants from J.N. Adams' file. (3/1999)
Apparently they divorced as John Married 2nd time March 1822.

1830 MO census). His estate (intestate) was probated 10/20/1849. Miles
and Rachel had one girl and eight boys. Their descendants still live
in the area of Jackson Co, MO. (from letter to Mr Peters from Frances

7. Samuel Brook Rev Estep

(Dekalb
#268) 1880 (Dekalb #297).
Maybe born in KY (William in 1880 census said father born in Ky)
Scott Co Will Book 9-487.
He was a minister in Scott Co. He had a farm in Ft Blackmore beyond
Lick Creek on Chestnut Ridge.
Frances PerryBrickey wrote a history of Samuel Estep in 1971 when she
was 76. In it, shesaid that he was the first Estep to come to America
(in 1815), and that he was born in Ireland in 1803. Researchers think
this is incorrect, as are many legends, but it has value since there
is probably an element of truth in it. She said that he married Mary
Lane, and that they had four children, Lucinda,Katie, Billie and
Valentine. He owned a large farm 5 or 6 miles NW of Ft Blackmore,
beyond Lick Creek, known as the Chestnut Ridge. She had dates of
death: 8/18/1883, age 80, for Samuel and 10/22/1888, age 85, for Mary.
It has been said that Samuel Brooke Estep would say that his wife,
mother and mother-in-law were all named Mary Lane. (from Mary Turner
Elliott, 1999)

Mary Lane

She is speculated as the daughter of Samuel & Mary (Speers) Lane
because it would have been a probable marriage and the ages fit.
According to Fannie Steele in her book (p. 72), Samuel Brook Estep's
wife Mary was thought to be a Lane although no proof has been found.
They would have been married 1820/25, and both families were in Scott
Co in the 1820 census. That census shows a daughter 10-16 with Polly
Lane. Samuel and Mary were likely a cousin and sister to Katherine &
John whom Fannie Steele has speculated as the parents of General
Jackson Lane, her ancestor. Given the tendency to marry cousins and
theirbeing in Scott Co at the same time, this seems like a good
probability. Also, few female Lanes were of this good an age match in
the early 1800's.
In the Estep document written by Frances Perry Brickey, she stated
that this Samuel Estep married Mary Lane.
It has been said that Samuel Brooke Estep would saythat his wife,
mother and mother-in-law were all named Mary Lane. (from MaryTurner
Elliott, 1999)
