He was unable to feed or dress self. One day, while Winnie was working in the kitchen, Thomas got out of bed, pushed a step stool up to a high boy, retieved (sic) a pistol from the top drawer, got back into bed and shot himself. It is listed as a suicide. What do you think? Thomas and Winnie were the last of the Johns Families to live in the 150 year old Johns house on Front Street. Death Claims Mrs. Fitzpatrick
Beloved Prestonsburg Woman Dies at Home Here on March 3
Death spread its gentle wings over the life of Mrs. Rosamond Evelyn Fitzpatrick on March 3, 1932, at 9:30 am at her home here. It was no shock for those who knew that her long well-spent years and patient waiting that her three score years and ten had been well earned; yet it was the mantle of death to all those that knew her, loved her and were loved by her and when the curtain fell upon her live it cast its shadow upon the hearts of all those whose life was a part of hers. She was born at Independence, Grayson county, Virginia and came from one of the oldest and most respected families of Virginia and was brought to Kentucky when a very small child. She married Jasper Fitzpatrick November 17, 1871 who died July 13, 1908. She is survived by the following children: Mrs. Maggie Leete, Prestonsburg, widow of the late Dr. R. H. Leete; Dr. W.J. Fitzpatrick, Miami, FL; Mrs. Winnie F. Johns, widow of Thomas P. Johns, Prestonsburg; Ralph Booton Fitzpatrick, Frostproof, FL; Mrs. Edith Fitzpatrick James, Prestonsburg, Three children (sic), Tommy, Mary, Lackey and Bennie preceded her death.
She was widely known as Aunt Rosa, dearly and well loved by all and a charter member of Irene Cole Memorial Baptist Church.
While it was the mantle of death to all those who knew and loved her and were loved by her, it must be live anew to her, when the shadows fell; her life here was one of serenity, never flaring into the limelight, but spent around the fireside of home, in love and in sympathy as her life went out to those who laid their burdens and troubles at her feet, and where her hearthstone was a fountain of inspiration and consolation, and she never failed them. Her antidote for trouble was prayer, and she well knew, as she often said from experience, "was answered when all else had failed," and by which the writer of this feeble contribution was impressed. Every wrinkle in her kind face was a mark in the calendar of well spent years. It was hers not to receive, but to give. There are many men who can ad will down through the corridor of years testify that her counsel was the chart and compass in their lives, when tempest tossed and the billows rose high, that guided them into harbors of safety and success.
She was not only a mother to her own, but a mother to those who were motherless; she had pride and ambition not for herself alone but for hers and those she loved, and she was comforted to know that this had been achieved. Though she is dead she is yet living in the hearts of those whom she knew and was comforted, and time will unfold and the mission for which she was sent. Words are fruitless to say all that is in our hearts to try to say, and we can but hope that the deeds done and the words said by her to lighten the burdens of those within her circle of friends will continue with them, and to her children and her children's children, and those whose lives were nurtured and lifted by her wisdom and advice. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Eastern Star chapters in Prestonsburg. Pallbearers were: Jo M. Davidson, A.C. Carter, T.J. May, Chas. J. Humphreys, B.M. James, J.D. Oppenheimer, N.M. White, Jr., John Blackburn, H.C. Francis, J.D. Harkins, S.R. Auxier, Honorary pallbearers: Will H. Layne, William Dingus, Sam L. Spradlin, Charles Friend, John W. Hensley, Carl Col___. Funeral Services were conducted Sunday from the home by Rev. C.R. Nicholas (? rest unreadable)
