FRAZIER Mae, 96, passed away Mon, April 26, 2009 at Mason Headley Rd. where she has resided since 1998. She was born May 24, 1912, the daughter of the late Henry C. Frazier and Minalee (Combs) Frazier of Letcher County, KY, the oldest of six children. Mae first attended the newly opened Elsiecoal School. After eight grades she entered a new high school at Elsiecoal. At the time her mother was experiencing financial hardships in the raising of her family since the husband had died when Mae was 8 years old. Thus, while attending high school the Principal advised Mae, at age sixteen, to help her mother financially, by becoming a teacher. So Mae went to Morehead Normal School for the next year and a half, obtained a Certificate in teaching, and then began teaching at Elsiecoal Elementary School. She taught there for several years during which she took several extension courses and finished high school. Mae then decided to become a nurse and entered the St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in Covington, KY for the next three years. After graduating and becoming a Registered Nurse in 1944, she moved to Lexington and worked as a public health nurse for the next four years. She then enrolled in Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Health Nursing in 1949. Thereafter she worked for the Kentucky State Health Department until 1959 when she enrolled at the Graduate School of Public Health at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where she earned a Master of Public Health Degree in 1960. For the next several years, she worked for the Kentucky State Health Department in various capacities. In May 1973 she helped develop the Center for Creative Living and Day Care Center for elderly persons along with the Jr. League of Lexington. This program was published in "Nursing Outlook" in October 1960, and it became a model for other health departments nationwide. In 1966, Miss Frazier joined the faculty at the University of Kentucky and taught Public Health Nursing until 1971. She returned to the State Health Department and retired from there in 1976. That year she was named to "Who's Who of American Women" and is listed in the 1977-78 edition. During her professional career she was a member of the American Public Health Association, the Kentucky Public Health Association, the American Nurses Association, the Kentucky Nurses Association, and various health organizations. After her retirement she continued to be active in the Calvary Baptist Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Republican Party, and the Kentucky Mountain Club. She also authored the Combs and Frazier family genealogies. Miss Frazier was predeceased by her parents and five siblings, Clyde, Wilma Frazier Early, Willard, Wesley, and Henrietta. She is survived by her niece, Phyllis Early (Dr. Lewis) Hicks; and many other nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be 12 noon Wed at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, 3421 Harrodsburg Rd. by Rev. W.K. Simmons. She will be interred at Blue Grass Memorial Gardens and Mausoleum, 4915 Harrodsburg Rd., Nicholasville, KY. Calling hours will be 6-8pm Tue at the funeral home and 10am Wed at the funeral home until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 150 E.
