After marriage the couple lived in Lebanon, Virginia for a short period
of time, then moved into a log home at Willow Springs, Virginia in the
Moccasin Creek Valley of Russell County. His medical practice was
basically confined tothe western section of Russell County and part of
eastern Scott County. Herode horseback and sometimes used a buggy.
During the Civil War he served asa surgeon with the Confederacy in a
Richmond hospital. He returned home in 1864 to move into a new brick
home at willow Springs. He raised cattle and sheep for the eastern
market and had a saw mill and grist mill powered by water. He was very
fond of his church; he gave land for Stuart Chapel Methodist Church and
for the parsonage on Copper creek. According to the minutes of the
Holston Conference, he was an active member on the important church
committees. His home was always open to the circuit ministers. In 1890
he renteda home in Abingdon, Virginia, so he could school some of his
daughters at Martha Washington College. In 1893, he was thrown from a
runaway buggy and injured his head on a rock. This is believed to have
caused his death.
