Killed at Culp's Hill in the Battle of Gettysburg (from the records of
the Confederate army in the State Library in Richmond, Virginia). Was a
private inCompany K and served in the 48th Virginia Infantry. Buried,
as far as the records show, at Culp's Hill, where he was killed. The
marker there states: CSA - Army of Northern Virginia, Ewell's Corps -
Johnson's Division - Jones'sBrigade - 21st, 25th, 42nd, 48th, 50th -
Virginia Infantry.
Below this on the marker is listed the maneuvers for each day of July 1,
2, 3 and 4.
The last letter dated 6-4-1863 Samuel P. McFarlane wrote home before
going into battle at Culp's Hill was in the possession of Elizabeth
McFarlane Gilmer Reichenbach when she compiled these records in
Springfield, Washington Co., Kentuckyin 1952. She was also in
possession the original letter he wrote to his parents.
