From Virginia State Records in Richmond, Virginia, James Hanson McFarlane
wasa Confederate officer in the Civil War. He enlisted at age 21 on
June 25, 1861 as a First Lieutenant in Company D 48th Regiment Virginia
Infantry at Abingdon, Virginia. In April, 1862, he was "dropped". Files
at Gettysburg, Virginia, show a Sergeant in the Illinois Infantry,
commanded by General Warren.His family has a picture of him in his army
uniform which shows him in a Union uniform.

12/13/61. Present 2/28/62 and 3/31/62. Failed reelection, dropped from
rolls 4/21/62.
Buried on Daughtery Gilmer plantation part owned by Arthur C. Gilmer of
Hansonville, Russell Co., Virginia (only one grove).Lived in Alberta,
Canada for awhile. Moved to Independence, Kansas. Upon death of Alonzo
Childs moved toHansonville, Russell Co., Virginia, where she lived with
Arthur C. Gilmer until her death.
