Nelson Gay

Nelson was born near Rush Creek in what was then Clay County, Kentucky... he built a home near the Turkey Branch and lived there for 60 to 70 yea rs and never moved but his address changed from Clay County to Perry Coun ty to Leslie County.

In the "Perry County, Kentucky, A History" By Hazard Kentucky Chapter, Dau ghters of the American Revolution, copyright 1953 it states: " Among the f amilies prominent in the early days of the settling of the Buckhorn area m ay be listed the following names: Johnson, Amis, Anderson, Baker, Barge r, Bowling, Burton, Callahan, Deaton, Fox, Gay, Gross, Hacker, Lewis, McDa niel, McIntosh, Riley, Sebastion, Smith, Turner, White and York. In 192 7, Asbury Johnson, while a graduate student at Peabody College in Nashvill e, Tennessee. started work on a paper entitled, "A Brief History of vario us Families around Buckhorn, Kentucky" the work was ceased because of h is ill health and subsequent death. Before the death of Luther, his brothe r, in 1951 obtained some of his material for study......An interesting sto ry is told of the pleasant relationship between Jerry Smith, of Buckhor n, and Nelson Gay of Gay's Creek, which is six miles above Buckhorn on t he road which now leads to Hazard, via Chavies and Grapevine Creek. It see ms that Nelson Gay had a drum at his home on Turkey Branch, just above Gay 's Creek and Jerry Smith had a Bugle at Buckhorn. The two men used to sign al to each other these six miles until "Marshall's Rebels" took Nelsons dr um during the Civil War.
