686. Gillis Sizemore

went to prison a little while for killing john collett???

(Medical):http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/COLLETT-WILLIAM/2002-08/1030469193

Well, Gillis Sizemore lived on Lick Fork in Clay County, and John Collett’s
brother Hiram Collett also lived on Lick Fork. Gillis Sizemore would travel
the road with a high powered rifle. He said: “Them Colletts is afraid of my
Man Chester.” I (Colson) believe they knew he was dangerous.

One day, John Jackson (a brother of Gillis Sizemore’s wife Josephine Jackson
Sizemore) hired Gillis Sizemore to help him fence at Laurel Branch in Lick
Fork. Gillis laid down his rifle, and Hiram Collett (a brother of John
Collett) got between him and the rifle. Hiram Collett’s son was with him.
Gillis Sizemore tried to run up the hill, and Hiram Collett’s son fired at
Gillis with a shotgun. They said one shot hit him in the knee, and Gillis
came down where Hiram Collett was. Hiram Collett held him with one hand, and
used his other hand to stab a big knife into Gillis Sizemore, and every time
he brought out the knife, Hiram Collett would lick the blood on the blade.
Gillis Sizemore bled so much, he drooped to the ground, and Hiram Collett
reached to pick him up, and John Jackson said: “Hiram, you have already
killed him.” Someone carried Gillis Sizemore over into Knox County, and he
lived near a week. Then he asked them to raise him up, and he sang: “There’s
honey in the Rock,” and died. Hiram Collett left Kentucky and went to
Virginia to get away from the law. The law tried to capture him, but he would
not give himself up, and they killed him in the house.
(added by Editor: Believe this incident also occurred between 1895-1900. In
the 1900 Census, Josie Sizemore and her younger children are living in Clay
Co. KY. with her oldest daughter Dora Sizemore Asher and husband Josiah
Asher, and remained with them through the 1910 Census).
