10665. Virginia Ruth Campbell

Virginia Houck Granite Falls Died: September 4, 2003 Virginia Ruth Campbell Houck, age 85, who grew up in West J efferson and resided there until moving to Granite Falls, in 1966, had recently been living with her daughter, Martha Houck Faw, in Greensboro. Mrs. Houck died at her daughters home early Thursday morning where her family had the honor of being with her and caring for her as she had spent her entire life doing for them. A graveside service was held for Virginia Ruth at 3 p.m. in Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery in the Baldwin Community of West Jefferson on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 7. Ruth was married to Oscar D. Houck until his death in 1987. She worked along with him helping him throughout their marriage in his elementary school teaching career and later as they started a very successful second career in the lumber brokering business. Although Ruth had many other activities during her life, most of them were involved with her family including taking care of her now deceased mother and father, D.H. and Viola Gentry Campbell, and helping by being an older sister to her brothers, Paul G. Campbell (deceased) and Bower Campbell (deceased) and her younger sister, Bobbie Edwards. Her sister-in-law, Lillian Campbell (Mrs. Bower) and brother-in-law, Ken Edwards, both residing in West Jefferson, along with nieces and nephews, Paul G. Campbell Jr. of Charleston, SC, Kena Edwards Sloop and Kim Edwards of West Jefferson, Bonnie Campbell of Hickory, Barrie Campbell Davis and Debbie Campbell Wall of Winston-Salem and John Campbell of Richmond, Va. survive Mrs. Houck. Ruth loved her Garden Club and her Granite Falls United Methodist Church Womens Circle. She was very active in both. Her children and grandchildren were of utmost importance to her as she was very proud of all their accomplishments. Her oldest child, Steve and his wife, Jean Robinson Houck, reside in Summerfield, where they both were recently honored for their outstanding service as they retired from teaching (Steve at Northwest Guilford Middle and Jean at Colfax). Their son, Christopher, works in Charlotte as a financial consultant and their daughter, Ellen, is in her first year of teaching children with special abilities at McIver School. Ruths youngest child, Martha Elaine Houck Faw, whose husband, Avery, is deceased, lives in Greensboro and was a former high school teacher and has for the past 22 years been a general contractor building homes with her own company, Southern Structures. Marthas son, Jonathan, and his wife, Amy Reece Faw, reside in Greensboro where he is a production coordinator with the A&V Company and she is a social worker with Triad Health Project. Steve and Martha received friends from 5-7 p.m. on Friday afternoon, Sept. 5 at Forbis and Dick North Elm Street. They also received friends on Sunday evening at their mothers home in Granite Falls. Steve and Martha and their families feel that God was looking over them daily during this very difficult time in many ways including allowing them to have the honor of working with such a caring professional as Dr. Michele Haber. Although Ruth dearly loved flowers, she and the children encourage you to send donations in her memory to either the Greensboro Habitat for Humanity or the Greensboro Department of Family and Children Services. Forbis and Dick Funeral Home, North Elm Chapel of Greensboro served the family of Mrs. Houck.
