3067. John Edmund Greer

GREER, John Edmund, lawyer; born on a slave plantation i n Italla Co., Mississippi, September 25, 1865, the son of Edmund Petus and Martha Phillips Oldham Greer. His father served as a cavalryman with Gen. Forest during the Civil War and came to Texas in 1870; his mother, Martha Phillips Oldham Greer, directed the operation of the two Greer plantations in Mississippi during the war. John Edmund Greer was tutored by his older sister and then attended Baylor University, Waco, Texas, until 1888. Married Eva Mae Kagens nee Gilstrap, a widow, at Coleman, Texas, March 5, 1910. One daughter, Alice Oldham, born March 6, 1912; one stepdaughter, Willie Mae Kagens Mrs. W. B. Sprayberry. Upon being forced to withdraw from college Mr. Greer continued studies at home, was admitted to the Texas State Bar, and then engaged in general pracitce in Lavaca and Coke Counties, Texas, for several years. While engaged in practice in Coke Co., Gov. O. B. Colquitt appointed him special judge of the Coke Co. Court. Voters of Coke Co., over his protest, wrote his name in the ballot for Co. attorney in 1914, and he served four years in this office. For the past several years he has engaged in general practice in San Antonio. Member of the Twentieth Century Bible Study Society of San Antonio director, Christ's Kingdom Society of San Antonio dean of laws and government, and of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows passed thru all chairds in 1907.
