According to Mary Killen Holifield (wife of Nathan Holifield), their son Jacob killed a man named Baker c. 1890 and escaped from jail in Clintwood and the family never learned of his whereabouts. ('Pioneer Recollections' by E. J. Sutherland, pp. 176-7)

A COLD BLOODED MURDER IN DICKENSON COUNTY

CLINTWOOD, VA., July 9 - Last Thursday Jacob Holifield, a young man of about 18 years, shot John Baker, the wound proving fatal. The particulars of the affair were about as follows: John Baker, John R. Vanover and Jake Holifield left Baker's house on Thursday morning to go to Eli Phipp's, a distance of four or five miles. Holifield insisted on taking Baker's pistol and fired, the ball taking effect in Baker's body, from which he died of about 10 o'clock next day. So far as I have learned no cause is assigned for the perpetration of this rash deed. Baker is said to have been an upright citizen. He leaves a family. Holifield it is said, has left the Commonwealth, and so far as I know, there is no effort made to arrest him.
