My grandmother's maiden name was Jessee, Ruby and she was borninRainier, OR in 1905. But her brother Dan, was born in OliveHill,Kentucky, but I do not have the date. Their father was James J.Jesseand I do not have his date of birth, but he died in the 1950's.He laterbecame a sheriff in Rainier, Oregon. Dan Jessee, mygreat-uncle, went onto be a famous baseball coach at Trinity Collegein New England. JamesJ. Jesse married Virginia Meade (or Mead) and ithas been said she was adescendant of General George Meade. I do knowmy family had roots inKentucky and Virginia. So I was excited when Ifound and read your webpage, but when I click on to any of the abovenames, I do not findanything. Now, I am just on day one, so I amreally, really a beginner.James J. Jesse had 8 children, but I onlyknow the names Ruby, Dan,Ethel, Grace, Hobart, George (Sonny). Icertainly hope you can be of somehelp to me. I do have a newspaperarticle about my uncle Dan Jessee fromGrayson, Kentucky, the JournalInquirer.

Subject: James J. Jessee son of David & Mary Howell Jessee??
In your database you have James J Jessee(I15224) as the son ofDavidJessee & Mary

& had children by 1900.
Census data as follows:

The census records for David Jessee & Mary Howell do not support this:

I speculate that James J. Jessee(I15224) is could be JamesJessee(I20174)who is in the 1880

At the same time there is doubt that James(I20174) is Daniel's as hedoesnot
appear in their 1870 census & Eleanor would have been approx 58 yrsoldwhen he was
born, but he could be their child:

Subject: Re: Meade genealogy
Virginia and Dicie (Boadica, my great grandmother) were the childrenofWilliam Henry Meade and Verbidia 'Biddy' Kaiser Meade. At the timeofDicie's death in 1952, Virginia was listed as living in Ranier,Oregon.I do not know anything else on Virginia. I have found some outon theMeade's and several sources list 'Biddy' as being BridgettElizabethKiser Meade. In my great grandmother's obit however it islisted as Iwrote it above. I do not know where any of them are buriedexcept mygreat grandparents. I did find Henry and Biddy in Carter Co.in a 1880census and my aunts and uncles said my grandmother used totalk of CarterCo. I have seen several rootsweb projects for Wm HenryMeade as well asBiddy's lineage. I am unsure of how much of the infois correct. My ggrandmother, Boadica 'Dicie' married John HenryBentley s/o RobertBentley and 'Chaddie' Blankenship. I am stillresearching those lines aswell. I would be happy to pass along anyother info that I have, justlet me know what you would like.

WHO IS DANIEL E. JESSEE?
Anyone who has done any library search for Jesse(e)s who may beauthorsmay have run across Daniel E. Jessee (1903-1970), a famouscoach andsports author, who is described in the article below. Thefollowing article wasprovided by Vivian Bales, and is from CarterCounty History, 1838-1976,put out by the Historical Society.

SPORTSMAN
Daniel E. Jessee (1903-1970)
Many Carter Countians have excelled in business and their chosenfieldsof endeavor, but none has surpassed the success of Daniel E.Jessee inthe field of sport.
He was born at Counts Cross Roads, Kentucky, the son of James JesseeandVirginia Meade Jessee. At an early age his family moved West andhereceived a Bachelor Of Arts Degree from Pacific University, ForestGrove,Oregon, in 1926, where he played baseball, football andbasketball. His tenure of thirty-five yearswas one of thelongest in College history. On the banquet circuit asthe "Dean of theNew England Coaches," he always proudly told of hisbirth in a log cabinnear Olive Hill, Kentucky.
It was here that he was acclaimed as one of the most successful ofthecoaches of his time.
In football, Coach Jessee's teams won 150 games, lost 76 and tiedsevenin the 35-year career. It is a record of excellence probablyunequalledover such a long term in modern college football. InJanuary, 1967,Jessee was named "Coach of the Year" in the CollegeDivision bycountrywide vote of his gridiron colleagues. Throughout1966 he hadserved as President of the American Coaches Association -the first coachof a small college to be thus honored. He was given aplaque for"Distinguished Service to Football" by Connecticut coaches.TheUniversity Club of Hartford made him its "Connecticut Man of theYear,"and as president of the National Coaches Association, he headedthecommittee that presented the McLaughry Award to former PresidentDwightD. In 1939 Jessee wrote "Baseball' an instructional book on thesport, published by A. S. Barnes. He has written many articles forprofessionaljournals. During and after World War II, he traveledaround the worldconducting clinics on football and baseball forservice men. He is amember of the Helms Football Hall of Fame. In 1958he received the GoldKey presented by the Connecticut Sports WritersAlliance, and held acommission as "Kentucky Colonel" granted byGovernor Breathitt in 1966.He was also a member of Baseball CoachesHall of Fame of America.

~I live in a seaport town a ferry ride from Seattle, where I grewup. There is a little town a few miles from me called Chimacum, WA.DanJessee actually was a coach here before going back East, so I amgoing tojoin the historical society here to see what I can learn. Myfather wasactually born here, too, and my brother and his son are bothalso namedDaniel. Although, there was a little bad blood because myfather was anextreme athlete with both baseball and footballscholarships. The storyI learned was that his Uncle Dan never helpedhim get into TrinityCollege. It was after my father's death that wefound a letter to myfather from Dan on Trinity College letterhead, onadvising him what todo...so I guess it just wasn't accurate. Wish Icould have discussed itwith him...There was a lot of dissension onthat side, and so I neverknew him as an adult...I am very sorry nowfor that. I also havepictures of him in my archives.

He had a brother named "Red". Ihaveno idea what his real name was. Red was married to Myrtle. Ibelievethey had a son named Leroy Jessee who died at the age of 18-19fromdrowning. Red and Myrtle also had a daughter named Linda. Redand Leroyare buried at Oak Hill cemetary in Kingsport, TN. I believetheirpicture is on their tombstone.
I believe there was another brother as well, deceased. Don't haveaname. May have been married to Amelia Owney?
And, I believe there was a sister. Gwen Jessee.
My father also has a brother, Larry Wayne Jessee who served intheVietnam War and has a purple heart.
I have a sister, Cynthia Demarias Jessee who lives in Kingsport.

I was checking my data and it looks like Albert is possibly not thechildof Martha Buckles. Thomas Ballard Jessee and Martha were marriedOctober20, 1892, and Albert was born in 1891 according to the cemeterymarker. If that is so his mother was probably Rachel Keith who marriedThomasBallard Jessee September 17, 1890. Thomas was also marriedfirst toSarah Skeen May 17, 1879. She died June 11, 1890.

The family tree document I am getting my information from is ahandwritten foto-copy some infor is missing and the lateist date is1975 soit only reflects back from 1975. One very interesting documentwritten byAmelia Jane Jessee Oney daughter of Taze Jessee recountsletters writenhome during world war two 1941-1945 to future wife HazelZella Moore.Taze was there from Africa thru Berlin.Reminds me of DavidA Jessee's(ID18423) letter from Winchester before he was killed atGettysbury 1863.
I belong to a National Org. the North-South Skirmish Association whichislocated north west of Winchester maybe the same place. We competewithcivil war era guns.
I would like to print Taze's letter but I will need Amella'spermissionbecause they are personal letters.
