1.  JOHN (1)2 COMBS (*RICHARD1) was born 10 March 1566/67 in Elizabeth, Devonshire, England, and died 1640.  He married MARGARET ARCHDALE 11 December 1587 in London, England, daughter of THOMAS ARCHDALE and (?) ARCHDALE).  She was born 06 November 1569 in London, England, and died Abt. 1664.

Notes for JOHN (1) COMBS:
Knighted in 1603.  John was known as "John Combs Merchant of London".  He was a prominent man in London.  Was given the title of Esquire.  That was an armsbearer for a Knight.  It was an honor to be chosen for this title.  His Will bore stamp of Oliver Cromwell, dated March 9, 1616.

John came to Jamestown, Virginia Colony on May 20, 1619 from London, England on the ship Marigold. He sent to London for bride (Elizabeth Willis) and was married in Jamestown, VA.  Known as "Jamestown John".  Since he was a younger son of John and Margaret, he would not inherit his father's estate according to British law, so he went to the "New World" to seek his fortune.  He agreed to serve the Virginia Company for a period of five years.  Reported to Governor Yardley of "the Jamestown Plantation".

Marigold,  a 30 ton, 12 man ship.  The captain was William Newton, Master.  The Marigold, A merchant ship serving under the Lord High Admiral.   Source, Ship Lists from Cindi's Lists.

BUTLER.  She was born 1625 in Old Lancaster, VA.  He married (2) MARY MOSELY 1674.  She was born in Rappahannah, VA.

Archdale was a prosperous planter, tobacco merchant and exporter.  On Archdale's land "the Mount", was a mill.  It was the beginning of a long line of Combes and their gristmills.  Combs either owned gristmills or operated ferries in Westmoreland, Caroline, Stratford, Old Frederick, Surry County, NC.  It was also said that he was a wealthy planter.  Archdale was known as "Archdale of Old Rappahannock, VA".  Part of Archdale's estate is now a military reservation whick includes "The Mount" in Caroline Co., VA.

Will Feb. 7, 1717.  Richmond County, VA.  Marriage and children are from Johiah Combs book, " Combes Genealogy".  He was a planter like his father.  His land was on Peuman's End Run in Caroline Co., VA., very close to where John Wilkes Booth was killed.  He was a rich man.  He left his youngest son, Mason, 200 acres of land in Essex Co., VA, to his married daughter Elizabeth Kendall, he left a cow.  He left the rest of his estate to be divided among his wife Hanna,  and the children.

Information on Joseph from Jeffrey Combs, 406 Gallup Ave., Mt. Carmel, TN. 37645.  It is believed he never went to KY, although his childen did.  Owned land in Stafford.  In 1775 he was called "an aged and infirm person".  DAR records in file.

8.  NICHOLAS (DANGER NICK)7 COMBS (*MASON6, *JOHN5, *ARCHDALE4, *JOHN3, *JOHN (1)2, *RICHARD1) was born 21 February 1736/37 in Caroline, VA, and died 28 February 1838 in Hazard (Perry) KY.  He married NANCY GRIGSBY Abt. 1770 in Warren Co.,  VA, daughter of THOMAS GRIGSBY.  She was born 1754 in VA, and died January 1850 in Perry Co., KY.

Notes for NICHOLAS (DANGER NICK) COMBS:

Nicholas was known as "Nick the Tory" or "Danger Nick".  He inherited the name because of his quick temper.  Danger was probably married twice, but little is known about his first wife.  Since Danger was about 35 at the time of his second marriage, it's assumed he may have been previously wed.  Danger moved from VA to the Holston Settlements near Kingsport, TN about 1786.  The islands there afforded protection from the Indians.  He later moved to KY with his brother John in 1808.  Danger and his family settled below Hazard at the mouth of Lott's Creek, where the town of Combs now stands.  he was a very large land owner.  Danger, along with his sons, "Birdeye" and "Chunky Jerry" were the first to mine and ship coal in Perry Co., KY.  His nephew, Henry Combs, my 3rd ggf owned the boats and made frequent trips to New Orleans, selling boat and cargo and walking home!

Later  "Birdeye" and his sons would take over the business until 1882.  Lorenzo and Alezander Combs were the sons.  Shelby later married Elmira, d/o Alexander.  Danger died in 1838 and is buried in the Old Combs Cemetery on Meadow Branch near Combs Bend.  His grave was recently marked by the Perry Co., Gen. Soc. and a marker placed on the grave in 1998.  See Aug. 1999 Issue of Perry Co., Newletter.

Notes for MASON (JR.) COMBS:
There may have more children in this family, but these aare the only ones known for sure.  The Johnsons, Hitchcocks, Jeremiah Combs and Simeon Combs families went to Warren Co., TN, as did the Paines.  Jeremiah married there and died in AR in 1867.  Nancy Fleming died in TX April 26, 1881.  Simeon died in Warren Co., in 1833. Millie Hitchcock died the same place in 11856.  Millie's name also found as "Amelia".  Sarah Johnson died in Warren Co., in 1828.  Martin Johnson died in AR in 1852.  Jeremiah and Charity had 10 children to live to adulthood.  See DAR application in my files for details.  Will signed Feb. 22, 1802 and registered in Hawkins Co., TN on Nov. 1, 1802.  Will Book Pg. 385.

John was a Rev. War Vet.
He is buried in back of the Pic-Pac Store on ol SR15 at Vicco, KY, on the Godsey Farm.  There is a Rev. marker by the grave.  Wife may have been named Stacy instead of Harding.  The following in the Annuals of Floyd Co., KY--Elijah Combs was appointed the administrator of the estate of John Combs, Dec and ordered that John Adams, Thomas Johnson, John Kelley and John Cornett to appraise the estate.  John is also known as the father of the "8" brothers who were the progentators for most of the Combs clan in the mountain area.  John served in the French and Indian War in the autumn of 1755 along with his brother Josiah.  It seems he also fought in the Revolutionary War with several of his sons.  Records show that John Combs served in Capt. Casey's Co.  John's son also served in the same regiment from 1777 to 1779 at the age of 15.  After the war he returned to Surry Co., NC and sold his land and grist mill to his father Mason in 1784.  John and his family met with his brother, "Danger Nick" and traveled to Kentucky.
He was an old man when he came.  (JP Downard has pictures of the grave which is not visible from the highway.)

William was born in Stafford Co., VA, later lived in Montgomery Co., VA before going to Russell Co., VA.  He was a blacksmith and served in the Revolution as a member of the VA Infantry, under Billy Washington.  He fought at Brandywine and later died of wounds he received there.  Pension #2187 VA., in my files.  Pension filed in Madison Co., KY by Sarah Ann (Million) Combs.  Data from the Russell Co.   Mason Combs was the first Combs to settle in Kentucky.  Settled below Carr's Fork.  Mace's Creek was named for him.  Info from Dickey Diary.  He named all of his sons after generals in the Rev. War!  Died in Typhoid Epidemic in 1822 in Perry Co., KY.  Was an extensive land owner with properties reaching up Carr Creek and extending to the Mouth of Mace's Creek (named for him).  He is buried on the point aboue the mouth of
Carr Creek.  Cemetery is Jeff, KY away from SR 15.  I have a picture in my files.  JPD

There was a William M. Combs who was a Capt. in the War of 1812.  Rev. War Vet.  Filed for pension in Bath Co., KY in 1818.  John S. Combs says William moved to the Bluegrass.  Listed in DAR Cen. Ed. on pg. 656.  Pension #S35859 Owingsville, Bath, KY.  Two years Service.  Issued June 17, 1818.  Was a Continental Soldier at Valley Forge.  Enlisted at Stoverstown, VA and was in Capt. Richard Campbell's Co.  Cols. Muhlenberg and Abraham Bowman's 8th VA Regiment.  In 1820 he ws a resident of Bath Co. KY aged 63 and wife 61. No children living.  Died March 8, 1840.  First settled on White Oak Branch of Carr Creek, just below Vicco.

John was a Revolutionary War Soldier who was with General Washington at Valley Forge the bitter winter of the war.  It is believed also that his father, John Combs was with him as there is an unidentified John Combs also listed in the unit.  Rev. Pension File S358517.  In DAR Cent. Book on pag 656.  From page 13-- a brief of Wills & Marriages of Montgomey and Fincastle counties, VA. 1733-1831.--Compiled by Anne Lowry Worrell-Combs, John and Biddy Nance May 31, 1779.  Joseph Porter, Bondsman.  Lived in VA-TN-NC until the 1790's when he came to Lincoln Co., KY.  He was living with a son-in-law, Joseph Goode on the 1840 census of Washington Co., KY.  Joseph Goode was named executor of his estate.  The following is from the Pinsion Roll of 1838 for Perry Co., KY:

When Harrison married Phoebe Francis they settled in "Old Big Bottom", now east Hazard, KY.  He was a river man, building and running flatboats from the mouth of Troublesome Creek as far as New Orleans.
In 1812 he moved to Troublesome Creek where he died.

Henry Combs was my grandfather.  He married Rachael Clements before he came to Kentucky.  They had children as follows: Matthew (my father), Henry, George, James, Stephen and Frank; Bettie, Polly and Winnie. Bettie married Jerry Combs; Winnie married John Miller; Polly, Downey Stacy.

My grandfather moved to Indiana about 1837 or 1838.  He visited KY about 1848.
He reared a large family by his second wife, Phoebe Francis.

George died in Perry on Troublesome. His descendents are still there. Henry married Nancy Brown in New River, NC and reared a family on Big Creek, Perry County. Frank married Bettie Oliver first, second Polly Couch, lived and died in Perry. Stephen lived and died in Breathitt.

My father married Frankie Brown on New River, (sister to) my Aunt Nancy Brown (who was married to Henry Combs). His children were: Aaron, Alfred, Matthew, Henry, Richard, Isaac B., Wm. M., Nathan, Rachel.

Aaron married Ruth Dickerson; Alfred, Peggy Noble; Matthew, Sallie Williams; Henry, Tempie Davis; Richard, Polly Back; Isaac B., Louvisa McIntyre; Wm. M., Jane Combs, daughter of Washington and grandaughter of Mason Combs, one of the original Combes; Nathan married Miss Cline of Arkansas and is still living there.  Rachael married Isaac Back.

Alfred and Henry lived and died on Troublesome in Breathitt.  Aaron and Matthew lived and died in Missouri; Richard in Montgomery Co., Ky. Isaac B., in Wolfe County, Ky., Rachael on Quicksand, Breathitt Co., Ky,

"I was born in ............Co., KY 1812. My father Martin Couch came to Ky.  from New River (on Holston). Old John Campbell's wife was my father's sister.  Old James Lewis' wife was another.

My father settled at the Mouth of Lick Branch in Perry County. He had seven sons, Joe, Thomas, Eli, John, Charlie, Ira. All these are dead but me. He had a brother John who came with him. John had sons: Wm., Andy, Lige, Dick, the latter died young. My father also had another brother James whose son lives in Clay "Stutter" John.

My grandfather John Couch came with them.... My mother was Sally Hall, Aunt of Philip Hall. They came a long time before I was born. My father was born before his parents came here."

In the above letter please let me add a couple of things that I know as the great-grandson of "SI" Couch.

Martin and Sally Hall Couch were both born in 1785 and were both listed in the 1850 Perry Co., KY census. One of them died in 1856. The other shortly after.  John Couch, father of Martin, is listed in the 1830 Perry Co. Census.

Polly Couch, d/o John Couch, was the wife of "Old John" Campbell. Sallie Couch, d/o John Couch, was the w/o James Lewis II. Both were sisters of Martin Couch.

If Sarah is the Aunt of Philip Hall, as the article states, she must be the d/o of John Hall SR who married Mary "Polly" Hash in Grayson Co., NC. Her father never came to KY. I have proof of lineage in my files.

Notes for LUCY FIELDS:

The children listed with Lucy Fields are illigimate, they were recognized by the court as the children of Henry.  I don't believe Henry Combs and Lucy were married.  Henry Jr. married Nancy Brown in New River, NC and reared a large family on Big Creek in Perry Co., KY.  Henry Jr. and Matthew, his brother, married Brown sisters.

Bond by Robert Hicks.  From Perry Co Order Book, 4-134  3-47  Commonwealth vs. Henry Fields.  Fields was recognized as illegitimate son of Henry Combs, then single and living with Jesse Combs, but not married.  Henry Combs had son, Wiley.  See Court Order declaring Henry Fields the legal son of Henry Harrison Combs, Jr.  Lucy was never married to him, but had children by him.  She married a Young and was in the 1850 Perry Co., KY census with him and children.
