Sutherland and Sarah Buchanan. Source: Materials provided by Lois Sutherland Wark, 12/1/1997. "Ephraim
enlisted in October 1813 in Lt. Andrew Caldwell's Company of Virginia Militia,
and had been marched to Norfolk. He was transferred to an artillery
company--Capt. John Dillard's company--and served in the artillery on Craney's
Island. He was honorably discharged on 13 March 1814--five months before his
brother Abednego signed up. Years later, Ephraim's daughter, Rachel Kiser, told
the story of how one brother had tried to save the other. Her account was
written down by E. J. Sutherland, the Dickenson County Judge and genealogist
who, with his wife, Hetty Swindall Sutherland, preserved so much of Southwest
Virginia's pioneer history. Rachel told E. J. that her father had gone to the
Norfolk war before he was married, that he had "loaded cannon with log chains,
scrap iron and everything." Having seen first-hand what it was like, he offered
to take the place of his brother, Abednego, who was married and had a family.
But Uncle Ab said. "No, brother, youv'e served your turn--I'll serve mine."
Uncle Ab went on a died there at Norfolk--I think of fever."
