Descendants of Dutton Lane

Notes

13. Soloman Lane

Scott Co census: 1820 (100100-10010-01), 1850 (#1078, 8 ch present),
1860 (#1228).
Greene Co census: 1840 (1022101-120011)
A copy of the marriage contractis reproduced in Fannie Steele's book
(p. 59) and Ed Nickels gave me a copy.It is very difficult to read
Sofia's name - it appears to be "Sotia F. Polys" with the P
overwritten. If you are looking for Estep, it can be interpretedas
such. The security was by Soloman Lane, William Lane (assumed father
ofSoloman) and Samuel Estep (father of Sofia). All signers used an
"his x mark."
Soloman's parents are difficult to determine. Most records have
suggestedthat he was the son of Dutton, but the close association
with Benjamin's andWilliam's family cause William to be more likely
his father. William would have probably been in Greene Co in 1795
which would explain Soloman's returning there for a few years. Being a
son of William would also make his wife hissecond cousin which was
common at that time.
The marriage contract is evidence that Soloman was the son of William
instead of Dutton. William's age is such that Soloman could have been
his oldest son. The fact that Soloman's oldest son was named Dutton
supports Soloman's father being Dutton.
Soloman witnessed the sale of land from Dutton Lane to Benjamin Lane
in 1828.
The marriage was mistakedly not recorded in Marriage Book 1 but was
recorded in a returnby Robert Kilgore and is in a box of loose
documents in the Courthouse atticroom. Marriage date was 2 Oct 1816.

Sophia F. Estep

Some of the children gave her name as Lucinda on their marriage
records.

14. John D. Lane

Washington Co, VA, census: 1840 (111001-000001), 1860 (#2291), 1870 as
John Layne (Goodson #665). Cannot find in TN 1850 census.
Both census records say born in TN.
He is probably one of the John Lane's in 1830 Scott Co census
(10001-00101) likely or (230001-110001).
Three children from 1860 census. WilliamLane & George W. Lane living
near by were speculated as sons. Joseph G. Lane, 51, could be a
brother.
Isaac Lane gave his birthplace as Sullivan Co, TNon his marriage
record. He was born abt 1839. William E. Lane gave his birthplace as
KY on two census records; he was born abt 1835.
He is speculated asa son of William because there is not another son
named John. He likely was gone to Ky by 1820?
I did not find John and Mary with any child in the 1880 census. (from
Patty Lane Purvis, 2/2001)
*****************************************
I also have strong feeling that John Lane b 1800 could be a son of
William B 1770 Va. What about the William of Va that received a land
grant in 1778 in Sullivan Co? This could possibly be the father of the
William b 1770. Another person that keeps coming to my mind is the
Tidence son of John Fuller. He had land in Washington Co., Va. The BIG
name though still goes to Williamb 1770 of Sullivan. He owned land
not more than 5 miles from the Buffalo Pondarea where John Lane b
1800 finally settled by 1840. William of Sullivan wasin the 1850
census.
Have you read any of the history of Pittsyvania Co., Va.? Dutton the
brother of John Fuller was a Baptist preacher there. He had a son
William. (from Patty Lane Purvis, 7/2004)
******************************************
I found a new bit of info on my John Lane b 1800. A Barbara Lindamood
that was next to John Lane in the 1870 census of Washington Co., Va
left in her will to John Lane and wife Mary the house that they were
living and40 acres. On some more legal paperwork at the death of
Linda it gave John Lane as John D. Lane. I have since seen the
original will to be sure that it looked like a D. So we at least have
something besides John Lane. (from Patty Lane Purvis, 7/2004)

(Abing #138)
He gave birthplace as VA in 1860, as KY in 1870 & 1880. There are no
childrenin any census, but James Nichols, 4, is shown as a son in
1880.
WashingtonCo, VA Marriage Register p. 276.

90. Thomas Lane

From my notes it appears that Thomas Lane b1841 son of John Lane
b1800, wentto Ky and married Angeline Weddington in 1860. I see them
in the 1870 and 1880 census of Washington Co, Va. Mary the daughter
married a William Jones b Floyd Co, Ky. This family seemed to still
have Ky connections.I found John andMary Lane With daughter Mary Lane
Jones and son Thomas 4 in the 1870 census of Washington Co, Va and
then 1880 I just find Mary Lane Jones and son Thomas.I did not find
John and Mary with any child in the 1880 census. I think thatI will
try to write to Richmond for another death certificate. The last time
I asked for between 1760 and 1770. Since I did find them in the
Goodson District not the Kinderhook District. (from Patty Lane Purvis,

(Name give was William J. Lane, assumed to be this one who is given
the same way in other records.)

18. Barbary Jr Lane

Scott Co Marriage Records 1-40. Scott Co 1840 census.
A younger sister age 20-30 may have been living with them in 1840, or
she may have given her age as 20-30 and the older female 30-40 could
be her mother with age incorrect (she should have been abt 55).
Posted by Sharon <scottandsharon@cs.com> on Wed, 27Sep 2000 [Scott
Co Queries]: I am trying to find any information concerning Samuel
Davis or Barbury Lane. They were married in Scott Co.,VA 3/31/1831.
Samuel died in 1860 and I believe he was killed in the Civil War. They
had a son named Lewis and he had a son named Leander which is my
grandfather. If anyone has any information please contact me!
Children of Barbary Jr. Lane and Samuel Davis were as follows:
2 i William Davis, born abt 1833.
3 ii James K. Davis, born abt 1835.
4 iii Sarah Davis, born abt 1837. She married Allen Watson].
5 iv Female Davis, born 1835/40.
6 v Anderson Davis.
7 vi Lewis Davis. He married Columbia Adkins.
John W. & Rebecca Wampler, Anderson & Catherine Kimbler, Samuel &
Barbary Davis and Hugh and Delilah (Lane?) Ross were adjacent
neighbors in the 1850 Wayne Co, VA/WV census.

19. Rebecca Lane

Moved to Wayne Co, VA (Later WVa).
Scott Co Marriage Records 1-50.
She is speculated to be the dau of William & Barbara simply because it
is a good fit. William & Barbara had several daughters this age, and
no one else in Scott Coat that time has unknown daughters.
John W. & Rebecca Wampler, Anderson & Catherine Kimbler, Samuel &
Barbary Davis and Hugh and Delilah (Lane?) Ross wereadjacent

persons
buried in Oak Grove Cemetary in this family. The handwriten list is in
Millard
Lane's notebook. Birth date from cemetery record is 1844, but she was
11 yrs in
1850 census.

116. Isaac B. Rev Self

Lieutenant and A.C.S. in 1st Tenn Cavalry, Union Army.

117. Joseph R. Self

With parents in 1880 census.

He would have been only 12-13 yrs old?

"Wampler Family History, 1701-1980," by Fred Wampler cites the 1850
Wayne Co, VA, Dist 66, census with the family. They are repeated here.
The three oldest children match the ones in the 1840 Scott Co census.
Wayne Co, Va, later became part of WVa.
There was a John W. Wampler,32, and Elizabeth, 28, in the 1850 Scott
Co census (#896) with children Anna,11, George B., 9, Martha, 6,
Arminda J., 4, and William, 7/12. This is a different John W. Wampler.

20. Delilah "Lila" Lane

Speculated as a daughter of William Lane because of age fit. She may
have been the oldest daughter of Soloman Lane instead.
Greene Co census: 1840 (12-00001) as Delilah Mosely beside Soloman. It
appears that whe was widowed or divorced before 1840.
She was disproven as wife of Hugh A. Ross of Wayne Co, WV. That was
incorrectly speculated because the Hugh & Delila Ross family lived
among the families of John W. & Rebecca (Lane) Wampler, Anderson &
Katherine (Lane) Kimbler, and Samuel & Barbary (Lane) Davis in the
1850 and 1860 Wayne Co, VA/WV census. Presence of proven children
Samuel and Mary with the Ross family is also support. (Son Andrew
Jackson Lane was with Soloman Lane in 1850census.)
Not with Soloman & Sosia Lane in 1850 Scott Co, Va, census, #1078.
Cannot find her in any marriage or census record after 1840.
MARRIAGE: Brugner,"Greene Co, Tenn Marriages 1783-1868" to Thomas
Mosley.
A. J. Lane's ScottCo marriage record gives Lila Lane as his father
(probably miswritten - should be mother). Jackson, age 9, is probably
the same person living with SolomanLane in 1850 census. These factors
make Lila, the daughter of William (or maybe Soloman), the mother of
the children appearing in the marriage records. No hints yet on what
happened - did Thomas Mosely die, or did they separate? Where is she
in the censuses?

127. Andrew Jackson Lane

Scott Co Census: 1850 (#1078, as Jackson Lane, age 9, with Soloman &
Sosia Lane)
1900, 1910, 1920 Scott Co Census. Apparently no children.
Appears to be the Jackson Lane, age 23, living with James D. Boatright
in 1870 (Dekalb #234)
Scott Co Marriage Records 2-100-23 & 3-50-33.
Union Army during Civil War according to a list of only 8 known. (as
Jackson Lane)
His marriage record gives Lila Lane as his father (probably miswritten
- should be mother). He is probably the same person living with
Soloman Lane in 1850 census. These factorsmake Lila, the daughter of
Soloman, the mother of the children appearing inthe marriage records.
No hints yet on what happened - did Thomas Mosely die,or did they
separate? Where was she in the censuses?

Nancy "Polly" Egan

Scott Co Marriage Records 2-100-23. As Nancy Egan, 61, single, dau of
John &Nancy Higgins.

Isabella "Belle" Penley

In 1910 census, she had 7 ch, 6 living - all apparently from first
marriage.
Will Book 22-191 gives living children and some g-ch - all appear to
be
Vicars. The g-ch appear to be from a deceased son?
Gr-ch were Mollie Vicars, 30,Gate City; Loyd Vicars, 28, Praise, KY;
Walter
Vicars, 25, Gate City; RachelStewart, 22, Indianapolis, Ind.
Scott Co Marriage Records 2-61-28.
Scott CoCensus: 1900 (Taylor #91, single! (should be wd?), 7-6 ch, 6
ch present)

22. Katherine Lane

Speculated as dau of William because of birth date and place. She had
seven children and lived in Carter Co, Ky (from Estep Book)
John W. & Rebecca Wampler, Anderson & Catherine Kimbler, Samuel &
Barbary Davis and Hugh and Delilah (Lane?) Ross were adjacent
neighbors in the 1850 Wayne Co, VA/WV census.

Anderson Kimbler

Wayne Co, VA/WV census: 1850 (#489, age 30; wife Catherine, age 30; 5
ch present)
Scott Co census: 1840 (0001-10001), 1860 (#915, with wife Elizabeth
with 10 children).
Johnson Co, KY Census: 1870 (Flat Gap #11, $300/$200; age 50 VA; wife
Elizabeth, age 45 KY; 5 ch present)
Lived at Iron Hill, Carter Co, KY in 1900 (Ellie Burch)
"ESTEP, Thomas Sr (c.1709-c.1772) of Frederick County,Maryland, and
his Descendants," by Vidal, Millichampe, Wheland, and Hanson. The
Estep Book gave the names of two wives, and said that he had 7
childrenby each of them. It said he married first to Elizabeth Coburn
and second toKatherine Lane. The record in the 1860 census shows the
marriage to KatherineLane was first. Children were not given in the
Estep Book.
Duane McKenzie,a descendant, gave abt 20 children. (7 in marr 1, 11
or 12 in marr 2) Familydetails and additions from Duane McKenzie,
1997.
The family moved to Flat Gap, Johnson Co, KY, about 1870.

128. Mary A. Kimbler

9 or 10 children (from Duane McKenzie, 1997)
Scott Co Marriage Records 2-7-21.

130. Hiram Kimbler

Not Married.
Civil War: As far as I know the Kimblers were Union. Joseph and Hiram
were Union soldiers. They were both in the 14th Ky.Volunteer Infantry
if I am correct. (from Duane McKenzie, 8/2004)
Civil War: Union Army, Co G, 14th Ky Vol Inf. (from roster)

133. Socrates Kimbler

Apparently died before 1850 because I cannot find him in the 1850 or
1860 censuses.

134. Rachel Kimbler

With Anderson & Elizabeth Kimbler in the 1860 census.

135. Elijah Kimbler

Elijah Kimbler was born 1850 in Wayne co. W.Va. He was a son of
Anderson Kimbler and Katherine Lane. Elijah Kimbler was raised by John
Wesley Wampler andRebecca Lane. Katherine was Rebeccas sister. Thank
you for emailing me and your letter. Let me hear from you. Let me know
of anything else on the Lane history. (from Duane McKenzie,
dmckenze@hutchtel.net, 8/2004)
Wayne Co, VA/WV census: 1860 (#1058, age 10, living with John W. &
Rebecca Wampler)
Lincoln Co, WV census: 1870 (Sherridan #108, as Elijah Kimble, age 20
with J.W. & Rebecca (Lane) Wampler)

23. Mary Lane

Debbie Harrison showed four children for Anthony Hoggatt & Susannah.
The first was Mary Hoggatt, b. abt 1795, d. abt 1865, Greene Co, m.
John Dodd.
The Doty book said there was 1 Lane daughter and 3 Hoggatt children
for Susannah Doty, so Mary was assumed to have been the daughter of
Joseph Lane even thoughshe married as a Hoggatt.
