(Dekalb #84).
Scott Co Death Records. Age 67 yrs, 3 mos, 4days. Reported by
Susannah Lane, head of family. Cause of death was not known. Son of
Benjamin & Polly Lane.
Six Lanes (Benjamin, Henry A., James W., John, Martin and Samuel) were
in the 25th Virginia Cavalry Regiment, Conferderate Army, also known
as the 27th Virginia Cavalry Battalion Partisan Rangers.Four of these
appear to be sons of John McClellan Lane.

275. John M. Lane

Scott Co Death Records.
He was in the 25th Virginia Cavalry Regiment, Confederate Army, also
known as the 27th Virginia Cavalry Battalion Partisan Rangers.

277. Wade H. Lane

Lived with Samuel for 1900, 1910 Scott Co census.
Never married according to notes of Ruby Kinsler via Phyllis Peterson.

280. Franky N.F.T. Lane

Scott Co Birth Records.
She is in notes of Ruby Kinsler via Phyllis Peterson.Franky would
have been
Ruby's aunt, so must be included.
Franky does not appear in census (1860 or 1870), so she must have died
young
and parents useda similar name for next daughter.

49. Keziah Rebecca Lane

Scott Co Marriage record 1-52 for Rebecca to James Conn. (Check name
if old record can be found - name could be Kisiah and misinterpreted
as Rebecca, which looks similar.)
Scott Co Marriage record 2-7-5 for Kisiah to William Smith. Her name
was Con. William was listed as single, so older children in 1870
census were assumed to be hers. Her parents given as Benjamin & Mary
Lane.
Inher internet site, Dianna Gilliam indicated that the marriage with
James Conn ended in divorce, but it is possible that he died 1840/50.
She said there were at least three James Conns in Scott Co at the same
time.
Scott Co census: 1840 (100000-00001, James was separately listed as
10001-10001), 1850 (#1011, Kiziah with a child Benjamin R., 3; this
was the only Conn in the 1850 census)
William Smith & Kisiah were in 1870 Scott Co census (Dekalb #175
besideBenjamin & Julia Lane). Not in 1860 or 1880. All children in
1870 named Smith.

James Conn

Probable son of Jesse rather than Levi because Levi moved to Ky before
1830 and James probably would have gone with him if his son. (from
Dianna Gilliam,3/2000)
A James Conn took a naturalization oath in Hawkins Co Circuit Court.
Minute Book 1810-1825. October Court Term, p 86. (from "Distant
Crossroads,"Apr 1986, p. 37). Could be father of this James Conn?
Second marriage from Dianna Gilliam's internet site, 4/2000.
Scott Co Census: 1840 (10001-10001)
Morgan Co, KY Census: 1860 (#473, age 46, Va; wife Sarah, 22, Va)
There was a James CONN who moved to Morgan County, KY when Jesse
Wilson CONN and his familymigrated there. There are also LANES in
Morgan County. Do you suppose if David LANE married one of Jesse's
children the LANES would have also moved to Morgan County? (from
Dianna Gilliam, 2/2001)

[I visited] Mary Alyce Preston and her sister Betty. They were excited
to hereabout our finding the old mill. She showed me a copy of the
notes that my Great Aunt Alyce Moore Chambers wrote about our
connections to the "Layne" family. including Benjamin Lane in Scott Co
Va. I believe she wrote this about 1950. Since she spell Lane with a
"y" I believe she was recalling what her father or someone else was
telling her. She noted where John Moore and Rhoda Lanewere buried
near Glenhayes but my search of the area indicates the grave site was
destroyed long ago when the highway (US52) was improved. All
cemeteries in the area had modern graves. You can still see remnants
of the "Old US52" which have been moved and straighten along with the
railroad tracks. (fromMike Moore, 3/2002, after his visit to Scott

54. Samuel C. Lane

He was divorced in Chancery Court 1 - 248, 4/10/1850, by Polly Lane.
He was guilty of adultry & still living in adultry with a woman by
whom he has children. It appears that Mahala living with Benjamin Lane
in 1860 & 1870 is his child, and referred to in the divorce.
A Scott Co marriage license was issued 3/3/1853 to Samuell Lane and
Elizabeth Dockery. The marriage is not recorded inthe marriage book
and may not have occurred but the license was present in the
courthouse. In the margin of the hand written license is "Sam. Lane
madeoath that he was 21 years old, & E. Dockery father gave his
consent" and wassigned by J.O. Wood.

Civil War: Union, 1st Sgt. Co. "K" 5th W. Va. Regt. Inf (from grave

I was not aware of Samuel Lanebeing in both the confederate and union
army but i had heard stories of hisbeing a spy for one side but i
have not got proff and did not belive the story could be true cause
all i found was the one side. (from Phyllis Ferguson, 10/2004)
The birthdate of Samuel Lane Jr on the 1900 census was given as 1850.
I have assumed that the date is incorrect and should have been b.
1863, butit seems possible that Samuel Lane (b. 1827) may not have
known of the birthof a child to his first wife Polly. Perhaps
something happened to cause Samuel (1850) to seek his father and
return to Scott Co sometime after 1870 and then Samuel the father
going to live with Samuel the son sometime between 1880and 1900?
This Samuel C. Lane (b. 1827) was a pretty interesting character.
There are a few records that indicate that he fathered children out of
wedlock.
He was divorced in 1850 by his wife Polly Lane for living with another
woman and for having children with this other woman. This other woman
may havebeen Elizabeth Dockery whom he married in 1853. Elizabeth had
a daughter Mahala Dockery, b. 1850, I think Mahala was shown as
Mahala Lane, age 10, withBenjamin Lane in the 1860 census. In 1871,
Mahala Dockery, dau of Elizabeth Dockery, m. Wm Kinsler. Mahala died
in 1872 of fever and the record showed heras a base born daughter of
Elizabeth Dockery. Mahala had a daughter VictoriaMelissa Kinsler, b.
1872, who m. James W. Ball in 1901. I have not found Elizabeth Dockery
in or after 1860, so she may have died in the 1850s.
EldersonHarvey McClellan, b. 1863, was a son of Mary Cannon McClellan
who never married. Elderson & Mary moved to Wayne Co, WV, probably in
the 1870s. Elderson was called a "war baby" and his death record shows
father as "unknown." Familystories say that he told people that his
father was Ben Lane, but some descenants say that he father was Sammy
Lane and that Ben Lane was his grandfather. Circumstances fit for his
being a son of Samuel Lane.
Samuel Lane m. MaryPowers in 1865 and it is pretty certain that
Samuel was the father of Mary'schildren Samuel L. Lane b. 1863 and an
unnamed infant Powers b. 1864 before they were married. Samuel L. Lane
was in the 190

Mary Cannon "Polly" McClellan

Scott Co census: with parents in 1850, 60, 70.
Mary C. McClellan never marriedaccording to her descendants. During
the Civil War, she had a son Elderson Harvey McClellan. Elderson
married Helan Amanda Wiley and had five children. One of those was
Bessie Kate McClellan who married Frank W. Black. Helen "Lynn" Kaszar
is the fifth child of Bessie and Frank. When the homeplace burned,
Mary and her son Elderson moved to Wayne Co, WV. (From a letter to Ed
Nickels from Helen "Lynn" Kaszar (3/5/1994)). (also see notes for
Elderson McClellan, her son.)
The McConnell book said that Mary McClellan never married.

Scott Co Marriage Records 2-17-4. William Hardin, age 45 to Elizabeth
Sanders, age 31, dau of Jacob & Sarah Sanders.
Family from "WamplerFamily History, 1701-1980," by Fred Wampler.
**************************************
I have her parents as Jacob Sanders and Sarah Wampler from Scott
County, Virginia.
I have her children as:
James Sanders born 1849 Scott Co., Va.- Died April 8, 1853 Scott Co.,
Va.
Emily J. Sanders born 1853 Scott Co.,VA.
James Sanders born 1855 Scott Co., VA.
John Jesse Sanders born 1859 Scott Co., VA. - Died 1912 Lincoln Co.,
W.V.
Some files on the Web have these children listed as Jacob and Sarah's
because they are listed with them in the census records but they are
Elizabeth's children. I am just not sure who fatheredsome of the
children.
Birth certificate for Emily lists father's last name as Cocke [Cox].
John Jesse Sanders listed as illegitimate on birth certificatebut
oral family history says his father was a Lane.
Don't know anything about the fathers of the other two children.

**************************************
I checkedout the Gillenwaters and found that they intermarried with
the Harden and Cocke families. This explains why Elizabeth was with
them since one of her children was fathered by a Cocke and she married
a Harden.
So far I haven't foundWilliam Harden but he probably had a close
connection to the Gillenwaters through one of his siblings.
When I first started looking I had oral history ofa John Lane as the
possible father of John Jesse Lane born 1859. I could notfind any
connection of a John Lane to Elizabeth. But it makes me wonder if
there is something to it since we possibly have not found our Thomas.
Maybe his name was John Thomas and they called him Thomas, just a
thought!

57. Susan G. Lane

Marriage to Stephen Ramey from Addington, "Charles Kilgore of King's

Susan, dau of Benjamin, was in the 1850 Scott Co census with Benjamin.
Joshua Ramey lived near Benjamin Lane (3 houses away in 1860).
Susannah, dau of Soloman, was in the 1850 census with Soloman.
Concluded that it was Soloman's dau that married WilliamEstep;
William Estep lived beside Soloman Lane in the 1860 census. (see RIN

information from Clella Lizetta "Dolly" Hood Crawford (Mrs Jasper
Crawford). Additional information from Robert Hood, Elizabethton, in
1996.
He contributed $4 for the building of Depews Chapel Meth Ch in May
1849 and was on the committee for building the church (firstnamed of
committee members)

Nancy Lane

She is speculated in this family as brother of Henry Lane. In the Hood
FamilyBible, there is a reference to John Lane's death, son of Henry,
suggesting that the Dutton Hood and Henry Lane family were close. As a
sister of Henry and son of John, Nancy would have been Dutton Hood's
first cousin, so marriagewould have been probable at that time.
"Sullivan Co Death Records," by Nikazywith death record for Martha A.
Coats
had Martha's parents as Dutton Hood and Nancy Lane, thus proving Nancy
to be a Lane and verifying family legends.
She is buried beside Dutton Hood. (Brenda Light, 2/2001) [she does not
have an engraved marker]
