Descendants of Dutton Lane

Notes

75. George Dutton Lane

In 1850 Scott Co, Va, census, #1078, with Soloman & Sosia Lane as
Dutton Lane, age 26; he was listed last?
He divorced Patsy on 10/15/1856 (Chan Court Book2-27) and married
Margaret Laney one week later.
Scott Co Census: 1860 (#1391 as chair maker)
Lawrence Co, KY Census: 1870 (Precinct 9, #95, 4 ch present; next door
to sister James & Sarah Owens)
Sullivan Co Census: 1880 (15th Dist, #196, with as brother Samuel
Lane; Dutton Lane, age 1, was probably George Washington Ross Baker,
son of Minnie.)

Scott Co Marriage Records 2-5-22 & 2-63-34. The marriage license to
Margaret Laney gave place of birth as Copper Ridge, Scott Co. He lived
atHunters Valley, Scott Co at time of marriage.
Thomas' second marriage gave his parents as George & Peggy Lane. Name
verified by Creda Isaacs, 2000.
Marrrecord to Margaret Laney shows him to be son of Soloman & Lotia.
1860 Scott Co census shows daughters Winny M. (3) & Sarah (1). 1880
Sullivan Co census shows a child Winafred M. (23) - surely the same as
Winny. His wife in the 1880Sullivan Co census was Sigbra Jane - which
fits Siddy Wright with the marriage record in 1880 in Scott Co
(parents not given for that marriage). The children in the 1880
Sullivan Co census match several Scott Co marriages well.
His designation as a "tramp" in the 1880 Sullivan Co census suggests
that he may have had a rough time, but this title probably was for the
legitimate occupation of peddler. The best guess is that he went to KY
during the Civil Warand stayed until Margaret died. He returned to
stay with his brother Samuel in Sullivan Co. The Sullivan Co census
shows his wife as being from KY, and that is more likely than Scott Co
as shown on the marriage record.
His birth date on the various records varies from 1814 to 1824, with
the best average being about 1816-20.
His brother Samuel in the 1860 Sullivan Co Census was not previously
included in Soloman's family.
Civil War: CSA 21st Va Infantry Battalion, Co D2, Enl on 4/5/1862 at
Moccasin Gap, Scott Co, Va, due $50 bounty.Present 11/30/1862. Also
CSA 64th Va Mounted Infantry (as Dalton Lane), Co D,Enl on 4/5/1862
at Moccasin Gap, Scott Co, Va. Present until he deserted on 6/21/1863.
Family group sheet from Creda J. Isaacs, 3/2000.

Margaret "Peggy" Laney

Birth place from marriage license. Lived at Hunter's Valley, Scott Co
at time
of marriage.

394. Sarah Jane Lane

Scott Co Birth Records.
Scott Co Death Records.
Not in 1870 or 1880 census with family.

395. William Floyd Lane

Scott Co Birth Records.
In 1870 census with family, not in 1880. William F. &Floyd W. thought
to be the same person.
Letcher Co, KY Marriage Index. (as Floyd Layne)

399. Thomas L. Lane

Scott Co Marriage Records 3-25-24, 4-84-16. Birth in Ky on Marr 1,
Scott Co on Marr 2. Parents as Dutton on Marr 1, George Lane & Peggy
Laney on Marr 2.
Scott Co Census: 1900 (Dekalb), 1910 (Dekalb, no ch), 1920 (not
present), 1930 (Dekalb #284, age 53, KVV; wife Suss, 56, VVV; incl
Manuel F. Gibson, st-son, his wife Elsie and his son Charles)
Second marr has his father as George Lane and Peggy Laney. Since
Dutton Lane & Margaret Laney had a son George of this age, it seems
like a good fit and the name George was correct or his father was
George Dutton Lane.

Adeline Estep

Listed as a granddaughter in Samuel's will as Adeline Estep.

Susan Castle

Scott Co Marriage Records 2-109-46, d/o Catharine, Scott Co.
Marr 2 had her parents as George Finch & Catherine Castle, birth in
Russell Co.
Scott Co census: 1880 (Floyd #253 with Lewis & Nancy Dean. George &
Susan Finch were at #252 and Catherine Castle was at #254. Info from
Delmar Fraysier.)

76. John Lane

Scott Co Marriage Records 1-134, 2-32-21 (Marr 2 to Lucinda Estep.
Both werewd.)
Scott Co Census: 1850 (#1078, with Soloman & Sosia Lane), 1860 (#1406,
age 48, chair maker, wife Judith, dau Martha 14), 1870 (Dekalb #271),
1880 (Dekalb #3339).

Judith Baldwin

Her name was Indy (should be Judy?) Lane on Martha Baldwin's marriage
recordlisting her as the only parent.
Scott Co Marriage Records 1-134.
Scott Co Census: 1850 (#721, age 20, with child Matthew (apparently
Martha), age 3, withDavid Baldwin)
She appeared to be a sister or sister-in-law of David Baldwin.

Lucinda Harrison

Lived with John Lane & daughter Rosa in 1900 Scott Co census (Dekalb
#317).

77. Austin Lane

Ratliff and attestedby Sirlynion McGuire and William Lain. Consent

Drake.

78. William Layne

Pike Co, KY Marriage Records, compiled by John Jay Johnson.
"Marriage Bonds ofPike Co, Ky," by Clyde Runyon. Oral consent by John
Ratliff, parent. Bond signed by William Lane & John Scott.
Family info from Fannie Steele, "Country Roads & Lanes."
Pike Co, KY census: 1850 (#421), 1870 (Bent Branch Dist 8, #98),1880
(Upper John's Creek, 8th Precinct, #15).

411. Caroline Layne

Not in 1870 census with family.

79. Corbin Lane

Speculated as a son of Soloman Lane & Sophia Estep because of
circumstantialevidence. His Civil War Army record said b. Scott Co,
VA. Soloman Lane had ason in 1840 census that matches Corbin's age.
One of William Lane's daughters, Barbary, m. Samuel Davis and moved to
Wayne Co, WV along with two of Barbary's sisters who were neighbors in
the 1850 census. It is possible that SarahMariah Davis was somehow
related to Samuel Davis.
Civil War: Union Army, CoG, 8th Tenn Cav. Enlisted as Corbin Lane,
age 39, as a private on 1/27/1864 at Nashville, Tenn. He was stated as
born in Scott Co, Va, and was a farmer. His physical description was
given as: eyes - blue; complexion - fair; height- 5 ft, 10 in. He was
present through 2/29/1864, but was absent and sick at Columbia, Tenn
in Mar and Apr 1864. By May 1864, he was present with his company and
doing patrol duty on the railroad line between Nashville and Columbia.
He was present throughout the campaign into East Tenn in the summer
and fall of 1864. His military record shows his only absence was when
he was left dismounted "at Cantonment Springs, Tenn" (near Knoxville)
during Mar and Apr 1865. His age was given as 41 when he mustered out
on 9/11/1865. (from BarnettMcConnell, "Boys in Blue - Union Soldiers
of Scott County, Virginia.")
He was not shown in the 1890 census of Union soldiers in Tenn.
I have not been able to find him in the 1850 US census.
Greene Co Censuses: 1860 (Dist 21, House855 two houses from Dutton
Lane, Jr & Susan Gass; age 35 VA; wife Sarah, 35,children William 8,
Margaret J. 7, Alexander 6, Martha A. Davis, 3 mos),
1870 (Dist 16, House 36 near son William, age 46 VA; wife Marena 42
TN; 6 ch present (Margaret 16, Alexander 14, Thomas, Mary A. 5,
Eveline 3, Alexander Davis 9)),
1880 (Shown twice - Dist 21, House 244, age 55 VVV; wife Sarah, 51
TTT; 3 ch (Thomas 19, Mary 15, Elvina 13); also Dist 20, House 229,
age 50 TTT;wife Mariah, 50 TTT; 3 ch (Thomas 16, Mary Ann 15, China?
12))
He was not in 1870 Tenn Census Index, but he was present in Greene Co.
He could have married Sarah Davis abt 1860 and William, Margaret &
Alexander are not her children? Two Davis children in 1860 & 1870
census are listed; they may be the samechild (Martha Alexandria??)
The only Corbin Lane in the 1850 census is in Hanover Co, VA, and he
is a different family. Donna Cole said that family legends are that
Corbin came from Coeburn, VA. Lots of research needed.
Jerry Barron said that his family stories are that Billy, John and
Enoch Lane came from Durham, NC and married Smiths and Thompsons.
He apparently was the Carban Lane who was the second for the marriage
of Andrew Penley (grandson of Epp Penley) and Jane Estep, dau of
Alexander & Margaret (Hood) Estep on 1/11/1856 inGreene Co, TN. This
ties him to the Hoods and Esteps.
Thomas Lane was a founding elder, somewhere along the line I ran into
a document that showed the names of all of the original members of the
Greeneville CPC. On that list of original members, there was indeed
another Lane, and the name given had a "C."as one of the initials. I
do wonder if that would have been the Corbin thatI have traced my
lineage back to that was born in VA. (from Casey Nicholson,8/2004)

Sarah Mariah Davis (?)

Sarah in 1860 & 1880 census. Marena in 1870 census. Donna Cole had be
told that he was married to Mariah Davis.
Greene Co census: 1900 (Dist 12, #76) withg-dau Lizzie Lane b.
4/1882. House 76 is the same as for Thomas C. Lane. 1900census gave
10 ch, 4 living.

418. Martha A. Davis

Not with family in the 1870 census.

80. Samuel Lane

Not in the 1850 Scott Co Census, #1078, with Soloman & Sofia Lane
Greene Co Marriage Records to Sarah Starnes.
Sullivan Co Marriage Records to Julia A. Smiley.
Julia's brother Henry m. Amanda Hood, dau of Dutton Hood and the
Smileyslived near Bays Mtn and present day Sullivan Gardens. This
suggests that Samuel was closely related to Nancy Lane Hood and Henry
Lane, but no other evidence can be found for that fit. He could be
speculated as the son of John Lane, but does not appear in the 1830
and 1840 censuses with the family thought to be theirs. This is
probably the Samuel Lane in the 1860 Greene Co census -living beside
Henry Lane & Eliza Jane - looks like a brother, but does not fit the
census. Having Dutton Lane with him as a brother in the 1880 census
seems to confirm that he was a son of Soloman & Sofia Lane.
There are also marriages of a Samuel Lane in Greene Co in 1862 & 1865.
Greene Co, TN Census: 1860(#813-758, $0/$75; age 30 TN; wife Sarah,
age 24 TN; 3 ch present)
Cannot find him in the 1870 census.

Lane as brother with his family)

423. Nancy Ella Lane

Scott Co Marriage Records 3-4-27, as Ella Lane, age 26, dau of Samuel
& Julia. Birth place given as Scott Co.
Nancy lived in Tex and when she died, she left land to her brothers
John & Worley. The family story is that John was already in TX & my
grandfather Worley was still in TN. John wanted all the land &when my
grandfather refused to sell or give his land to his brother, John
forged my grandfathers name on a deed. After that my grandfather never
spoke of his brother.
I have a very old picture of a baby taken by a Lancaster, TX (near
Dallas) taken of a baby. The name John Woody Lane is written on the
back. This must be John's son. (Donna Alvis, 8/2004)

81. Catherine A. "Kattie" Lane

Scott Co Census: 1850 (#1078, with Soloman & Sosia Lane)

Cannot find the Albert or Catherinein the 1870 census.

82. Susannah Lane

Scott Co Census: 1850 (#1078, with Soloman & Sosia Lane)
This Susan is here because of Fannie Steele's putting her here. A
Susan of the same age is dau ofBenjamin, and could be the one that
married William Estep.
Both Susan's werein the 1850 census.
In 1860 Scott Co census (#1227), they lived next door toSoloman
(#1228).
Scott Co Marriage Register 1-145.

William Rev Estep

Fannie Steele's book, p. 60.
Scott Co census: 1860 (#1227 beside Soloman Lane), 1870 (Dekalb #269),
1880 (Dekalb #276), 1900 (Dekalb #75, 5-3 ch), 1910 (Dekalb #74, 2-2
ch).
Scott Co Marriage Register 1-145.
Notes in Harold Peters' Estep family notebook gave only 3 children -
Martha, William (died young) and Elizabeth.
Family details and additions from "ESTEP, Thomas Sr (c.1709-c.1772) of
Frederick County, Maryland, and his Descendants," by Vidal,
Millichampe, Wheland, and Hanson.

433. Elijah Estep

1860 Scott Co census.
Scott Co census: 1910 (Estil #400 as Elis Estep. m1-34,0-0 ch.)
He is assumed to be the Elis Estep in the 1910 census since the ages
match and
there is no other record for Elijah Estep. The census shows that there
are no
children. Wife and marriage date from 1910 census.
Elijah was not included as a son in Frances Perry Brickey's 1971
family record.

434. Samuel W. Estep

Norton, Va. (1998) It said that Calvin was said to have fathered 19
children. One child, Sara Davidson, was out-of-wedlock; he supposedly
traded a side of meat for favors from her mother. It was said that he
had children by marriages two and three, but that is uncertain.

85. Alfred Lane

Family info from Fannie Steele, "Country Roads & Lanes."
Scott Co Census: 1850(#1078, with Soloman & Sosia Lane)
With brother John in 1870 Scott Co, VA census (Dekalb #271) - no

86. General Jackson "Jack" Lane

Book by Fannie Steele traces his family. (1991)
Was in 48th Infantry, Confederate in Civil War (from David Lane)
Wise Co, VA census: 1870 (Lipps #161), 1880(Walker #1).
Dickenson Co, VA, Marriage Records 8-59. (Marr 2 to Frances Stanley;
he was wd, son of John & Catherine Lane.
Wise Co Marriage Records. (m.3, his parents as Joe & Catherine Lang,
birthplace as Scott Co.)
Fannie Steele concluded that his father was John S. Lane, son of
Samuel & Mary (Spears) Lane. It seems that John Lane, son of William,
may be a better candidate because of the close relationship of members
of Jack Lane's family with some of Soloman Lane's family in Pike Co,
KY. John Lane, speculated son of William, hasbeen a mystery because
he seemed to live in several different places and there are few good
records. Lots of speculation on this family's origin.

458. Jasper T. or Joseph Lane

Not in 1870 census with family.

Frances Stanley

Her marriage record gave Russell Co as birth place.
