He worked in the coal mines around St Charles, VA, for 27 yrs. He and
Eva owned and operated a gorcery store in Meadow Fork 1940-55. They
operated an grocery store which included a restaurant and gas station
in Stone Creek 1955-57. They bought a grocery store in the Wild Cat
section of Lee Co in 1957 and built a house beside the store where
they lived until 1972 he was found to have lung cancer.

KINGSPORT _ Annie Bugas Coates, 92, 2700 Long Hollow Road, died at
9:20 a.m.Thursday (May 11, 2000) at Wexford House.
Born in Bluff City, she came to Kingsport at the age of 16. Mrs.
Coates was employed at the Borden Plant of J.P.Stevens.
She was a member of Glen Alpine United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Orbe Coates; and five
sisters, Gladys Nickels,Veda Nickels, Treola Nickels, Hazel Waycaster
and Lula Nickels.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Brenda Coates
and Kenneth and Carolyn Coates, all of Kingsport; two grandchildren,
Sue Travis and Dewayne Coates, both of Kingsport; three
great-grandchildren; one brother, Cecil A. Nickels, Kingsport; and
several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral
Home, downtown.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home
chapel.
Interment will be in the East Lawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be David Strickler, Ralph Hood, Harold Lane, Benton
Rasnake, Horace Burke and Guy Middleton.
Honorary pallbearers will be Clay Burke and Bill Calhoun.

FALL BRANCH - Erma G. Richards, 91, a former resident of Fall Branch,
went home to be with the Lord Wednesday morning (June 4, 2003) at Four
Oaks Health Care following a lengthy illness.
Bornin Sullivan County, she had resided in the Fall Branch area most
of her life.
Preceding her in death were her parents, William and Nora Hood Coates;
husband, Lacy Richards; son, Joe Jones; two grandchildren, Mary Jones
and MichaelJones; two sisters, Leona Kennedy and Zella Burke;
brother, Orb Coates; andson-in-law, Johnie Conkin.
Surviving are one daughter, Dorothy Conkin, Fall Branch; one son and
daughter-in-law, Johnny and Emogene Richards; daughter-in-law, Opal
Jones, Morristown; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one
great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Fall Branch Chapel of
Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes.
Services will be held at 8 p.m. Friday in the Fall Branch Chapel with
theRev. Victor Wallace officiating.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sulphur Springs
Cemetery.
Mrs. Richards' grandsons, great-grandsonand grandsons-in-law will
serve as pallbearers.
