KINGSPORT - Sevier Garlan Grogg, 90, passed away Sunday (March 18,
2001) after an extended illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Kingsport. Mr. Grogg retired from J.P.
Stevens, Borden Plant, in 1973 after 40 years of service.
He was a faithful servant of the Lord, and his life was an example of
Christian values.
Mr. Grogg was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, and a
friend.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Belle (Hood) Grogg; son,
Douglas S. Grogg; parents, Sam and Melissa Grogg; grandson,
Christopher DeFreece; great-grandson, Lawrence DeFreece III; and a
sister, Beulah Haynes.
Surviving are his daughters and sons-in-law, Bettie and B.K. uJimu
Wallen, Kingsport, Helen and Lawrence DeFreece, Church Hill; eight
grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and nine
great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Andrew Grogg, Kingsport, Sam K.
Grogg, Blountville, John Lewis Grogg, Peoria, Ariz., and DamosGrogg,
Gray; sisters, Juanita Calloway (Mr. and Mrs. B.B. Calloway), Oliver
Springs, Tenn., Georgia Calloway (Mrs. R.J. Calloway), Statesville,
N.C., Thelma Venable (Mr. And Mrs. H.P. Venable), Gate City, Va., and
Olivette (Betty) Fletcher (Mrs. J.C. Fletcher), Kingsport; special
family friend who was like a daughter, Vivian Cox; and many very
special nieces, nephews and neighbors.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hamlett-Dobson
Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of the
funeral home with the Rev. Paul Lane and the Rev. Orville Dolen
officiating.
Burial will follow at East Lawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Ball served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from
Tennessee Eastman Company in 1976 after 38 years of service.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Fall Branch where he served
as Deacon, Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent, and Training Union
Director. He had served as Fall Branch Community Chest Director.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Iva Ball; and a
brother, Clifford Ball.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Coates Ball, of the home; a daughter
and son-in-law, Libby and Mike Depew, Fall Branch; a son and
daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Peggy Ball, Asheville, N.C.; two
grandchildren, Rhonda Morgan and Heath Depew; and one sister, Eula
Ball, Nickelsville, Va.

Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
A lifetime resident of Kingsport, he retired from Tennessee Eastman
Company and was a former employee of Holston Defense-Area A and of
Foremost Dairies.
He was a member of Kingsport Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
He was preceded indeath by his parents, Arthur and Sarah Effie Grills
Coates; and four brothers, David, Jack, Ben, and Howard Coates.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Frances Jennings Coates; son, Brent
Coates; two daughters, Vicki Coates Frasier and KayTate and her
husband Keith; five grandchildren, Amanda, Julie, and Adam Tate, Catie
Coates, and Nathan Frasier, all of Kingsport; three sisters, Margaret
Ball of Fall Branch, Jane Winegar of Kingsport, and Kate Schmutz of
Michigan; and one brother, Joe Coates of Kingsport.
