Shewas born Sept. 10, 1923 to the late Cain and Lula Williams
Hammonds.
Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey
Lane Sr.; sisters, Nettie Estepp and Jerlene Richards; brother, Ulys
Hammonds; and infantbrother, Kenneth Hammonds.
She was a member of Tipton's Chapel Freewill Baptist Church and
attended Lynn Garden Evangelical Methodist Church.
Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Ovalee
Archer, Wilma and John Tipton, Janice and Paul Jennings and Mildred
and Mark Clonce, all of Church Hill; three sons, Dewey and Edie Lane
Jr., Billy and Barbara Lane, all ofChurch Hill, and Donald Lane,
Kingsport; sisters, Inez Bailey, Kingsport, andDorothy Peters,
Greeneville; brothers, Calvin, Victor and Joe Hammonds, allof
Kingsport; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces
and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Gate City Funeral Homeand
other times at her residence.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. todayin the Gene Falin Memorial
Chapel with the Rev. Buddy Legg and Elder Jimmy Combs officiating.
Eulogy will be given by Don Lane.
Music will be provided by Tim and Amanda Hammonds.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Holston
View Cemetery, Weber City, Va. The family will meet at 10:15a.m. at
the funeral home to go in procession to cemetery.
Pallbearers willbe grandsons and sons-in-law.
Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Webb, Lloyd Grimm and Vance
Tittsworth.

GATE CITY, Va. - Rev. Roy E. Jennings,91, went to be with Jesus
Friday (Nov. 8, 2002) at Holston Valley Medical Center.
He was born in Scott County, Va., on Feb. 26, 1911 to the late William
Floyd Jennings and Laura Elizabeth Hammond Jennings Hart. He was a
loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He served as a Sunday
School teacher and area minister and was loved and respected by his
church. Mr. Jennings was amember of Morrison City Mission Church.
He was a welder and pipe fitter at Mead.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first
wife,Marcella Cleo Lane Jennings; two stepsons, Melvin Akers and
William Akers; sisters, Belle Hart, Mary Hammonds and Cora Mae
Jennings; brother, Hayden Jennings.
Survivors include his wife, Viola Elizabeth Lane Jennings, of the
home;daughters and sons-in-law, Eva and Charles Kilbourne, Church
Hill, Brenda and Darrell Kerns, Gate City, Va., Glenna and David
McMillan, Gate City, Va., Shirley Martin, Kingsport, Linda and Larry
Johnston, Kingsport; sons and daughters-in-law, Jack H.K. and Juanita

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Jarrett Lane; parents,

Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Patsy and Johnny Noe,

about his age and first joined the Civil Conservation Corps and worked
near Abingdon, VA. He joined the Army Cavalry in WW II and was
assigned to the Army Air Corps when the cavalry was disbanded. (from

KINGSPORT - Mr. Herbert Edsel Smith, 78, entered into rest Friday
(Jan. 17, 2003) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Mr. Smith was born in Scott County, Va., on Sept. 9, 1924, son of the
late Lemuel Harmon and Bertha Emily Lowe Smith.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
In addition to his parents,he was preceded in death by a
great-grandson, Christopher Steffey; and sisters, Vernell McDavid,
Hester Jennings, Frances Hammond and Mable Wolfe.
Surviving are his wife Virginia L. Smith, Kingsport; daughters and
sons-in-law, Terry and Billy Herdon, Groveland, Fla., and Lesia and
Randale Cross, Kingsport; son and daughter-in-law, Darrel and Luisa
Smith, Durham, N.C.; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Gate City Funeral
Home and other times at the residence.
Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the Gene Falin Memorial
Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Paul Lane officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Holston View
Cemetery, Weber City, Va. The family will be meeting at the cemetery
for the graveside service.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
