is father of 7 ch, 25 g-ch, 31 g-g-ch.
GATE CITY, Va. - Walter Edwin Fields, 97, departed this life Sunday
night (April 8, 2001) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, Weber
City, Va.
Mr. Fields was born in Scott County, Va., on Jan. 26, 1904, a son of
the late James and Pearl (Reed) Fields.
Including his parents, he was precededin death by his wife, Lona
Strong Fields; daughters, Katherine Fields Ball and Faye Fields; son,
Gene Fields; grandson, Billy J. Sandidge; several brothers and
sisters; daughter-in-law, Nina Williams Fields.
Surviving are two sons, Claude Fields, of the home, and Paul Fields,
Manville, Va.; four daughtersand sons-in-law, Mrs. Bobby (Bill)
Gillenwater, Midway, Va., Mrs. Jimmy (Loraine) Hammonds, Manville,
Va., Mrs. Garney (Dorothy) Lawson, Gate City, Va., Mrs. Virgil
(Shirley) Monroe, Weber City, Va.; sister, Analee Sullivan, Detroit,
Mich.; daughter-in-law, Frances Fields; 25 grandchildren; 45
great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; several nieces
and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Gate City Funeral Home and
anytime at the residence.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Gene Falin
Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Claude Lane and the
Rev.Roy Lane officiating.
Music will be provided by David and Debra Easterling.
Interment will be at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

GATE CITY, Va. Gladys Strong Fields, 92, entered into rest Sunday
(Aug. 24, 2003) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
She was born in Scott County, Va., to the late William and Katherine
Lane Strong and was a lifelong resident of Scott County.
Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John
Fields; one son, Frank Fields; sisters, Lona Fields, Sophia Couch and
Pauline Goad; brothers, Pete, Bruce, Elmer, Fred, Lester, Jack and
Samuel Strong; grandson, Mark Fields.
Survivors include two daughters, Lillie Fields and Elsie Wallen, both
of Gate City, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Shirley
Fields, Joe and AnnFields, all of Gate City, Va.; 14 grandchildren;
23 great-grandchildren andfive great-great-grandchildren; and several
nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Gate City Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Gene Falin
Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Jerry W. Smith, the
Rev. Roy Lane and the Rev. Mike Fields officiating.
Music will be provided by The Living Waters Trio.
Burial will follow the service at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City,
Va.

GATE CITY, Va. - Deborah Ruth Strong, 92, passed away peacefully
Tuesday (Nov. 20, 2001) at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol,Tenn.
Born in the Union Temple community of Greene County, Tenn., she was
the daughter of the late Dr. John Calvin Marshall and Minnie McCollum
MarshallRatliff.
She was a graduate of Doak High School and Tusculum College, and
taught in several Greene County schools.
In 1945, she married and moved to GateCity, Va. She served as church
organist for Gate City Methodist Church and First Baptist Church of
Gate City. She was a member of Union Temple United Methodist Church,
the Greene County and Tennessee Retired Teachers Association. Her
interests included her family and researching family history.
Other thanher parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,
Homer F. Strong; threesisters, Trula Marshall, Anna Babb and Nova
Hartman; three brothers, Vivian,Cecil and Oren Marshall; her
stepfather, John Ratliff.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Debby and Jack Taylor of
Yuma, Va.; two grandsons andtheir wives, Ty and Misty Taylor of Gate
City, and Brad and Rebecca Taylor ofMonroe, N.C.; one great-grandson,
Darren Ross Taylor of Monroe, N.C.; one brother, Robert Marshall of
Greeneville; several nieces and nephews.
The Rev.Paul Blessing will lead a graveside service at Union Temple
Cemetery at 3 p.m. Saturday.
The family will receive friends immediately following the servicein
the church fellowship hall.
Friends may also call anytime at the home ofthe daughter in Yuma, Va.
Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., is in charge of the
arrangements.

Mary Magdalene Meade

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Mrs. Mary Magdalene Strong, 79, of Charlotte, NC,
passed away Saturday (Jan. 3, 2004) at the Carolinas Medical Center in
Pineville, N.C.
Mrs. Strong was born in Nickelsville, Va., on Sept. 22, 1924 to
William L.and Martha Elizabeth Meade. She spent the majority of her
life in Kingsport,however, she spent the last five years in
Charlotte.
Mary was a lifelong member of Fort Robinson Baptist Church. She was a
homemaker most of her life, and had worked at Eastman Chemical Co. and
at Nettie Lee Shops. Mary enjoyed gardening, cooking, travel, and
bluegrass music.
Mrs. Strong was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer McKinley
Strong; and her parents, William L. and Martha Elizabeth Meade.
Survivors include her two sons, Terry Strong and wife Shelia of
Pineville, N.C., and Rick Strong and wife Donna of Charlotte; three
grandchildren, Brent Strong and wife Beth of Pineville, N.C., Kelly
Strongof Charlotte, and Erin Strong of Charlotte; a great-grandson,
Kaleb Strong ofPineville, N.C.; two brothers, Walter Meade and wife
Florence of Nickelsville, Va., and W.L. (Bill) Meade and wife Verna
Ruth of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday atOak Hill
Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday inthe funeral home
chapel with the Rev. Gene Hughes officiating.
Graveside services will follow immediately on Tuesday in the Oak Hill
Memorial Park.

GATE CITY, Va. - Jack Strong, 74, entered into rest Wednesday (Aug.
13,2003) at his residence.
Born Nov. 1, 1928 in Scott County, Va., he was of theMidway
community, was a veteran of the Korean War and employed by the
Virginia National Guard.
He was a son of the late William and Mary Katherine LaneStrong.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Strong is preceded in death by his
wife, Helen Strong; sisters, Sophia Couch, Loan Fields and Pauline
Goad; brothers, Lester, Elmer, Pete, Fred, Bruce and Samuel.
Surviving are a daughter andson-in-law Brenda and husband Eddie, Ft.
Blackmore, Va.; five sons and daughters-in-law, James and Sue,
Indiana, Benny and Kathy Kingsport, Tim and Yvonne Gate City, Va.,
Sammy and Betty, Ft. Blackmore, Va., and Dennis also of Gate City,
Va.; one sister, Gladys Fields, Gate City, Va.; 11 grandchildren and
10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6to 9 p.m. today at Gate City Funeral Home and
anytime at the residence.
Services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in the Gene Falin Memorial
chapel ofthe funeral home with Rev. Roy Lane and Evangelist Rick
Quillen officiating.
Music will be provided by Debra and David Easterling.
Burial will follow in Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va., with
military graveside rites conducted by the Charles Dewitt VFW Post
#3382.

GATE CITY, Va. - Helen Bernice Strong, 68, went to be with Jesus
(Monday, June 25, 2002).
She was born Jan. 20, 1934 in Leesburg, Va., to the late Henry Million
and Mildred Pearl Worthington Million.
Including her parents, she waspreceded in death by her brother,
Connie Million.
Mrs. Strong worked at Indian Path Hospital, worked for Scott County
Board of Supervisors and retired from Ridgecrest Manor Nursing Home.
Survivors include her husband, Jack Strong,Gate City, Va.; four sons,
James, Melotte, In., Ben, Tim and Dennis, all of Gate City, Va; three
sisters, Bobby Harper, Judy Denny, Indiana, and Kathy Doster, Georgia;
five brothers, Charles, George, Bill, all of Indiana, Tom, Ohio, and
Johnny Million, Georgia; eight grandchildren, Rodney, Jamie, Jackie,
Cheryl, J.C., Andrea, Melissa and Charlie; six great-grandchildren,
Steven, Payton, Zachary, Breyanna, Brianna and Dylan; and several
nieces and nephews.

BRISTOL, Tenn. - Barbara E. Hodge, 75, a resident of Wellmont Hospice
House, went home to be with the Lord at 2:07 p.m. Saturday(March 31,
2001) at the center.
Born in Pikeville, Ky., a daughter of the late John B. and Hannah
Branham Lane, she had resided in the Bristol area since 1966, having
moved there from Raymond, Wash.
Mrs. Hodge retired from Bristol Memorial Hospital in 1986, after 13
years of service as a CNA. She was a member of the Midway Baptist
Church in Gate City, Va.
Mrs. Hodge will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother
and great-grandmother.
She waspreceded in death by her husband, Orville H. uShortyu Hodge,
on January 17, 2001; and by a daughter, Shirley Lynn Sexton; and a
brother, J.B. Lane.
Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-laws, Patricia and John
Beach, Bristol, Va., Wanda and J.W. Bentley, Kingsport, Yvonne and Tom
Dillard, Bristol, Tenn., Phylliss and Jim Byrd, Gate City, Va.; five
grandsons, Robbie Nelson, Jay Warren Bentley, Mark Dillard, Michael

Works at Lab Glass, Kingsport.
He gave me the name of his daughter.
I believe that Jesse came backto Midway school after he had been in
service (Navy?) and played basketballfor one or more years. He was
written up in one of the local papers after a particurly good game.
The headline read that Midway lead by a "fleet footed bundle of
dynamite" named Jesse Lane won the Game. (from Bill Stallard, 6/2002)
