Family info from Tammy Gillenwater White, Tammy3446@aol.com.
Sophia was a homemaker, mother of 4 very rambunctious boys. She helped
farm the fields and take care of the chickens and hogs. Wil would not
allow her in town without him, most of the time, he bought her
clothes, including underclothing. She cannedjust about everything
possible under the sun. She had beautiful flowers allthe time in the
yard and in the house. I don't care who you were, when you stopped by
her house, she always had at least 4 fresh homemade pies. Pumpkin,
custard, apple, cherry pies. As a grandchild, you could always get
frozen fruit from the freezer, paw paws, blueberries (better than a
popsicle), strawberries, peaches, cherries, etc. Homemade yeast bread
was another favorite ofSophia's and she was such a great cook. As a
child, Grandma Sophia and UncleKay and Aunt Alphie would drive to
Pekin, Illinois and visit every summer. When it came time for them to
leave, I always got to go home with grandma for acouple of weeks by
myself. It meant so much to me as a child, to have grandma to myself.
I played with my cousin, Deanna. Deanna lived next door with hermom
and dad, O.D. and Nina. It was like a slumber party, between the two
of us and grandma. Grandma taught me so much. I still remember her
bent over her sewing machine. She made the most beautiful handmade
quilts. She entered her quilts in the County Fair, every year. She
always won a ribbon for them. There was a lot of craftsmanship in her
quilts. She made Dresden plates, double wedding rings, monkey wrench,
dutch boy and girl. I can't remember anymoreof the names of the
quilts she made, but there were many kinds. She worked hard all of her
life and then the diabetes took over. She stayed at Watseka
Healthcare Center, Watseka, Illinois after her diabetes became
unmanageable until her death. She is burried at Iroquois Memorial Park
Cemetary. The Rev. Neil Larimore officiated her funeral. Arrangements
were made at Segur-Knapp Funeral Home in Watseka, Illinois. At the
time of her death, Nov. 22, 1992, she had 17 grandchildren, 21
great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.
