GATE CITY, Va. - Mary Evelyn McConnell, 72, of Route 2, departed this
life early Monday morning (Dec. 3, 2001) at Holston Valley Medical
Center.
She was a native of Scott County and was a homemaker. Shewas a member
of Peter's Chapel Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John T. Strong and Della
Frazier Strong; sisters, Ruby Strong, Ina Tomlinson, Grace Summey and
Margaret Strong; and brothers, Ernest Strong and Henry Strong.
Surviving are her husband, Vernon Paul McConnell, Gate City; son and
daughter-in-law, Edward Paul and Charlotte McConnell, Weber City, Va.;
granddaughters, Christy Ramsey and Kimberly Ramsey, both of Gate City;
great-grandchildren, Michael Hammonds, Logan Ramsey, Gavin Ramsey and
Haley Ramsey; sister, Mable Gillenwater, Gate City; brother, Fred
Strong, of Michigan; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at theScott County
Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., and other times at the home of the son
on Blanton Drive, Weber City.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home
chapel with the Rev. Eddie Starnes officiating.
Music will be provided by James McConnell.
Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the McConnell Cemetery (Midway
community), Route 2, Gate City.
Pallbearerswill be Jay McConnell, Gene McConnell, Kelly McConnell,
Junior Howington, James Ramey and Matt Ramsey.
Family and friends will meet at the cemetery for the burial.

3444. Nellie Mae Bailey

MOUNT CARMEL - Nellie Mae Vaughn, 93, formerly of 119 Hemlock Street,
Mount Carmel, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday (March
15, 2003) at Brookhaven Manor after a lengthy illness.
She will be welcomed by her beloved parents, husband, sons, daughter,
sisters, brother, and other family members and friends. She was a
God-fearing lady who touched the lives of many.
Duringher young adulthood, she was employed at the Cotton Mill for 8
cents per hour. She left there for a job at the Glass Plant making 10
cents an hour.
She toiled on this earth as a wife, homemaker and parent and always
looked forwardto that world without end to spend eternity with her
family and all of God'schildren.
Mrs. Vaughn was a lifelong member of Kendrick's Creek United Methodist
Church in Colonial Heights, but attended Oak Grove Baptist Church in
Mount Carmel for many years. She also accompanied and supported her
husband, Lon, during the periods that he pastored many churches in the
area.
Born in Sullivan County, she moved to Mount Carmel in 1955. She was
active in the MountCarmel Senior Citizen's Center for several years.
Preceding her in death wereher parents, Samuel Patton Bailey and
Sarah Kate Light Bailey; her loving and dedicated husband, Rev. Lon
Vaughn in 1974; an infant son, Verlin, in 1929;a nine-year-old
daughter, Betty, in 1943; a son, Jack, in 1989; sisters, Lochiel
Bailey and Effie Isbel; and a brother, Perry Bailey. Also preceding
her in death were three grandchildren, Danny, Carl and Kathy Hill, and
their father, Glenn M. Hill, Melbourne, Fla.
Surviving are a daughter, Shirley R. Hill, Melbourne, Fla.; two sons
and daughters-in-law, Howard and Brenda Vaughn, Mount Carmel, and
James "Jim" and Andrea Vaughn, Mount Carmel. She leaves behind
grandchildren, Larry and Michael Hill, Melbourne, Fla., David Vaughn,
Kingsport, Terri Hill and husband Rick, Jonesborough (Eastern Star,
Chris and wife Christina Vaughn, Jonesborough (Eastern Star), and
stepgrandson, TimothyStapleton, Nickelsville, Va. Surviving also are
great-grandchildren, Christina Vaughn-White, Jason, Shannon and Dustin
Crawford, and Kaylie and Kylie Vaughn. Also left behind is a
great-great-grandchild, Devon Vaughn-White.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home,
downtown Kingsport, and any time at the homes of her sons, James
Vaughn, Mount Carmel, and Howard Vaughn, Mount Carmel.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in thefuneral home chapel
with the Rev. Alvin Skelton and the Rev. Earl Miller officiating.
Singing will be provided by Liberty Hill Quartet.
Graveside serviceswill be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Liberty Hill
Cemetery in Mount Carmel. The family will meet at Hamlett-Dobson at 12
noon to go in procession. Friends may gather at the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jason Crawford, Shannon Crawford, Dustin Crawford,
Dennis Ayers, Rick Hill, and Chris Vaughn.
Honorarypallbearers will be Willie Morelock, Carl Housewright, Ralph
Carver, JuniorLeonard.
