3472. Howard Keener Hood

ETOWAH, Tenn. - Howard Keener Hood, 74, died Thursday (Nov. 15, 2001)
at Athens Regional Medical Center.
A native of Sullivan County, he was a son of the late Nathan Frank and
Blanche Coates Hood, and was preceded in death by two daughters,
Rebecca Lynn Hood and Sandra Elaine Hood; and one grandson, Jason
Whitney Cassada.
He was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Sprinkle Hood of Etowah; one
daughter and son-in-law, Deborah (Debbie) and Kenneth Terrell (Terry)
Cassada of Athens; two granddaughters, Crystal Nicole of U.T.,
Knoxville, and Camille Melody of Athens; one sister and
brother-in-law, Juanita and Don McKenzie of Johnson City; and several
nieces and nephews.
Services were held at 8 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 18, 2001) in the south
chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home, Etowah, with theRev. Ronnie Allen
officiating.
The family received friends at the funeral home prior to the services.
Burial was at 2 p.m. Sunday in Green Hill Cemetery.

3481. Fred Grills

Lived at Kingsport, TN in 1995.
KINGSPORT - Fred Grills died Thursday (Oct. 25, 2001) at 7:30 p.m. at
his residence after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Born in Kingsport, he was a son of Noah and Ella Hood Grills. He was a
veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater. He received
two Purple Hearts, Oak Leaf Cluster and Bronze Star.
Fred retired from the City of Kingsport as building official after 38
years of service. He continued to workas building inspector with
Eastman Credit Union for the last 17 years.
Fredwas a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church. He
was a life member and former post commander of VFW Post No. 3382,
Moose Lodge No. 972, Disabled Veterans, Masonic Lodge No. 688, Eastern
Star No. 198 and Eagles Lodge.
Fred served on the board of directors of the Southern Building Code
covering17 southern states. He served as president elect and
president two years forthe Southern Building Code Group. By this
position he was invited by President Gerald Ford to represent the 17
Southern states to attend the Inflation Conference in Washington, D.C.
He served on the board of directors of the Salvation Army, and held
several offices and was post commander of the First District of the
VFW, as well as many offices and committees in the State VFW.
Hewas preceded in death by his parents, Noah and Ella Hood Grills;
brothers, J.D. Grills and Rex Grills.
Surviving are his loving wife Wanda of 55 years; daughter Rebecca and
son-in-law, John Grills; granddaughter (little angel) Ashley;
brothers, Robert and Russell Grills; several nieces and nephews and
manyfriends.
To know him was to love him. He will be sadly missed by all who knew
him.
Viewing will be in the church sanctuary of First Broad Street United
Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m. today with services being conducted at 3
p.m.with the Rev. Jack Edwards and Caryl Griffin officiating.
Special music will be by granddaughter Ashley Grills, and nephews,
Scott Brown and Tim Grills.
Committal services will follow with full military rites by VFW Post
No. 3382 Honor Guard at the Oak Hill Mausoleum.
Pallbearers will be Hugh Grills, Tony Grills, Buddy Archer, Wayne
Lambert, Bob Clear and Tom Gouge.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Brown, Jim Brown, Fred Brown, Butch
Grills, E.W. Hauk, EarlGarland, Jack Riggs, Zack Wright, John Mayo,
Mike Freeman, Joe Russell, Cecil Rose, John Wooten, Harold Childress,
Eddie Grills, John Brown, Dr. Chip Helms, Dr. Malcolm Matthews and Dr.
Michael Bookout.
Oak Hill Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.


3482. J. D. "Shorty" Grills

He lived in Kingsport, TN. He grad from Sullivan HS in 1933. He
retired in 1975 from Eastman with 45 yrs service (20 yrs in CE Lab, 25
yrs in Kodel Fibers; foreman at time of retirement.) He was a Navy
veteran of WW II, serving onan L.C.I. and participated in the D-Day
invasion. Member of St Matthews MethCh for 47 yrs. Cub Master of Pack
No 81. Served 3 times as Post Commander ofthe VFW, and in other
district and state offices. 1 g-son preceded him in death. Surv by
wife, 3 sons, 8 g-ch, 3 bro. (from his obituary)

be 67.
Her obituary gave birthplace as Wise Co, VA, but her parents lived in
Scott Co in 1910.
