Ervin Oscar Davis was my father. Myfather who I did not know as a
father, but as a kind man. He was hospitalized when I was three years
old with a mental disorder. My father was a farmerand a mill worker.
He worked at Speers Ferry Feed Mill with his father. Myfather also
did construction work on the Virginia Road Works with Bascom and
William (Bill) Calhoun. He was a deacon at Gravely Hill Baptist
Church. He had hypertension, heart disease, ulcers and his mental
disorder. He died from a heart attack. He is buried in the Barrett
Cemetery, Gravely Hill Baptist Church, near the church where he had

Martha Henrietta Calhoun Davis was my mother. She was the oldest of
13 children, and was was raised on a farm. She did farm work, house
work and also help take care of her brothers and sisters. My mother
and father were together for about 9 years when he was hospitalized.
After this time, my mother raised my sisters and me alone. Some of her
brothers and sisters helped as much as they could. Her father helped
her some. She taught us to have high moral standards. She also
taught us to be responsible individuals. My mother made all of our
clotheswhen we were younger. She is a kind and loving person. She has
a wonderful sense of humor. She loves gardening, particularly raising
vegetables. She hasplanted a garden for many years, regardless of
her circumstance, and her gardens bloom. She has to fight off the
neighbors, kids and dogs. She is a tireless harvester of fruits,
vegetables and anything else that grows. She willpick berries for
example, even when she doesn't eat them. She cans, she freezes, and
above all else she enjoys eating. She has always been a very healthy
person. She had never been hospitalized until she reached the age of
69. She has emphesema and asthma, but still leads a very active life.

KINGSPORT - Henrietta Calhoun Davis passed away Thursday afternoon
(July 17, 2003) at home.
Born March 2, 1915 in Speers Ferry, Va., she hadresided in Kingsport
for 52 years and was a member of Gravely Hill Baptist Church.
Henrietta was a homemaker, loving wife, mother, grandmother,
great-grandmother, aunt, sister and neighbor.
Preceding her in death were her husband,Ervin Oscar Davis; her father
and mother, Charlie Campbell Calhoun and Lillie Myrtle Lane Calhoun;
brothers, William Patton Calhoun, Charles Bascom Calhoun and Robert
Luther Calhoun; sisters, Sarah Joan Calhoun, Maggie Edna Calhoun and
Kathleen Ruth Calhoun.
Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, WandaEileen and Lewis
Goodall, Poquoson, Va., Dana Geraldine and Larry Dale Coleman,
Jonesborough, Sandra Kay and Donald Gene Taylor, Kingsport; brothers,
Calvin Coolidge Calhoun and wife, Helen Mae, Manville, Va., and John
Martin Calhoun and wife, Nancy, Kingsport; sisters, Gertie Helen
Carter, Church Hill, Mary Victoria Bell Carter, Kingsport, Dorothy
Rebecca Carter, Abingdon, Va., and Ruby Faye Nelms, Kingsport; eight
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; other survivors include
special friends, Virginia Lawson and Charlie Morrison.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral
Homes, downtown Kingsport.
Services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in thefuneral home
chapel with Rev. John F. Toney officiating.
Burial will followat the Barrett Cemetery in Speers Ferry, Va.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
