KINGSPORT - Mary Ellen Maness, 77, 113 E. Millpond St., died at 9:30
a.m. Friday (July 4, 2003) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center
after a short illness.
She was born in Gate City, Virginia, but was a resident of Kingsport
most of her life.
Mrs. Maness was a member of Cedar View Independent Methodist Church,
an active member of the Kingsport Senior Citizens, and did volunteer
work at the Boys Club and Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center
Auxiliary.
Her husband, Henry Harrison Maness Jr., and several brothers and
sisters preceded her in death.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Don and Sue Maness,
Kingsport; two grandchildren, Don Maness Jr., Robin Maness Dickerson
and husband, James; one sister Stella Carter, Gate City, Va.; two
brothers, Alfred Herron and Milligan Herron, both of Gate City; and
several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral
Home, downtown Kingsport.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sundayat the funeral home chapel
with the Rev. L.D. Lane officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Holston View
Cemetery in WeberCity, Va.

GATE CITY, Va. - Rufus Monroe Carter Jr., 70, was called home to our
Lord onFriday (Dec. 27, 2002) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical
Center.
Mr. Carterwas born in Scott County, Va., on May 19, 1932, son of the
late Rufus MonroeCarter Sr. and Jeanie Myrtle Carter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three
brothers, Robert W. Carter, Elmer Carter, and an infantbrother, J.E.
Carter.
A native of Rye Cove, Va., he served his country as asailor in the
U.S. Navy. He had made his home in Gate City for the past 46 years.
He attended Red Hill Freewill Baptist Church and was retired from
Fluor Daniels Construction.
Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Stella Herron Carter, Gate City;
son, Rufus Lynn Carter, Gainesville, Fla.; sisters, Edith Dockery, Rye
Cove, Va., and JoAnn Kilgore, Poquoson, Va.; brother, Charles Henry
Carter, Gate City; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 5to 8 p.m. today at the Gate City Funeral
Home, and other times at the residence.
Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday in the Gene Falin
MemorialChapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Vernon McDavid and
the Rev. L.D. Lane officiating.
Military graveside services will follow the service at the Holston
View Cemetery in Weber City, Va., conducted by the Charles DeWitt Byrd
Post #3382 of the VFW.
Nephews and friends will serve as pallbearers.
