stillborn. We don't remember the name of the midwife. Mom said itwas
either born before or after she was (1936) and they lived at Hardwood

gives his parents as Wesley & Hannah, but the Marriage Records
mistakenly give Worley & Hannah.
Jewel Dockerytalked with Maxie Bise (b. 1920), dau of Annie (Gilliam)
Martin and got a different story. She remembered a lot about Joseph
Lane. She said that he wenthunting one day and after a night and day,
they found his body. He had accidently shot himself while crossing a
fence. She said that Joseph and Molly weremarried when he got killed,
and that she would cry herself to sleep after ithappened. She said
everyone talked about what a good-looking man he was - said he looked
like an Indian - with coal-black hair. She said that they had two
girls that were still "youngins" when she married Bill Gilliam. Jewel
thought he died about 1889/90.
Ages of children in the 1900 Chattanooga, TN census suggest a death
date of about 1893. The children's birth in TN suggests that Joseph
and Clara moved to Tenn (perhaps Chattanooga) shortly after marriage

Clara Wheatley

*******************************************
E-mail from Ina Howard Willingham,7/13/2001:
I don't know if Clara Wheatley is the wife of Stephen I. Fuller, but I
have sent for her death certificate, so maybe it will have some
information. I have been in contact with the only child living of
Myrtle May Fuller Howard's, but have only talked to her on the phone.
I sent her a package of family information. I also got most of my
information from Betty (Mrs. Arthur) Howard, Myrtle's daughter in law,
who lives in Ringgold, Ga. They havesaid Stephen was from W. Va.
Betty said there were Lane's around Chattanoogarelated to Myrtle.
Most of my information on the Lane's I've gotten from census,
obituaries for Chattanooga (on the web) and the SSDI.

1874. John Wesley Lane

Obituary date from Chattanooga Times. (from Ina Howard Willingham,
7/2000)
Lived at Flat Top, TN in 1940.

Mary E. "Molly" Baldwin

Chancery Court 5-73 Nov 18, 1884. Joseph Lane divorced Mary E. Lane.
Mary E. guilty of adultry last 5 yr. defendant restrained from
marrying again & complainent custody and control of his children.
Chancery Court 6-195 Nov 1889. MaryLane divorces Joseph Lane.
Scott Co Marriage Records 2-76-47 as Mollie E. Lane to Lewis
Shoemaker. Dau of David Baldwin. Marriage record crossed out and
minister's name was blank indicating that it was not executed.
Scott Co Marriage Records 2-93-7 (Marr 2).
It was possibly her who was indicted in Apr 1885for bigamy and for
marrying a Negro. She was found not guilty in both cases. In Feb 1886
she was again tried for "lewd and lascivious association and
cohabitation with a Negro." She was again found not guilty. (Scott Co
Va Minutes Book 21-236, 260, 262, 269, 287? and 389.) Lewis Shoemaker,
a Negro, was listed in an adjacent indictment in two of these cases.
MR 2-93-7 Mary married 2nd time to Wm.F.Gilliam. minister Ira
Culbertson
1900 census states mother of 8 children and 8 children still living
only 6 children in household. Possibly two of her children she lost to
Joseph Lane and so far unnamed. (from JoeAdams)
Jewel Dockery talked with her cousin, Maxie Bise, dau of Annie
(Gilliam) Martin. She recalled several stories. She said that Molly
was one of triplets - the other two being Sally and Sarah. Sally
married an Akers from Church Hill, and she used to come and read the
Bible to Annie (her mother). She said that Sally(?) died at 18-19.
(DWL note: census records suggest that Mollyand Martha were twins.
Martha married William Logan Lane and she apparently died young. There
was no Sarah or Sally with the family in the 1870 census?) Maxie Bise
said that Joseph Lane & Molly were married when he was killed. (Later
found death record for Manda Lane that suggested that the story of
triplets is correct.)

1878. Manda Lane

Scott Co Death Records, died of brain inflamation, age 7 mos, 24 days,
dau of
Joseph & Mary A., reported by Joseph Lane, father.

1880. Not Named Lane

From Scott Co Birth Records. Assumed in this family because dates fit,
gave
parents as Joseph & Mary, and divorce record refers to children.

534. Mary Lane

Scott Co Birth Records.
Scott Co Marriage Records.

James R. Lawson

Scott Co census: 1900 (DeKalb #217, 10-9 ch), 1920 (Dekalb #3-164,
incl wifeMarie L. (58), son James E., dau Tempie Pendleton & her two
ch.)

1882. John W. Lawson

Scott Co Death Records (via J.N. Adams)

1891. H. Dewey Lawson

Scott Co Marriage Records 4-89-19.

536. Nelson Lane

Scott Co Marriage Records (2-105-2).
The Marriage Books show as a widower, butthe marriage license says
single. She was a widow, not him. The marriage license clarifies info.
Scott Co census: 1900 (Dekalb #83), 1910 (Dekalb #267).
Sarah was a widow in 1920 Scott Co census (Dekalb #190).

Sarah Elizabeth Estep

Both 1900 & 1910 censuses say 2 ch, 2 living. She must have had a
child by Babb
in her first marriage.
Notes in Harold Peters' Estep family notebook did not mention Babb,
and had
only one child.

538. James R. Lane

Child & family from Joe Adams.
Scott Co Marriage Records.
Scott Co Birth Records.

Laura M. Honeycutt

Scott Co Marriage Records 3-11-12 (Marr 2, wd)
Scott Co census: 1870 (age 6),1880 (age 15, name as "Lucy M. Laura"),
1910 (DeKalb).
Other sources had birthdate as 10 Aug 1868. Changed to 10 Aug 1864
based on census data.
"CountryRoads, and Lanes" Pg 182
Unmarked grave, not in cemetery records.

539. Eliza B. Lane

Scott Co Marriage Records 2-82-37.
She apparently died before 1900, assuming that the Martin Stapleton in
the
census is the same one. There may be more children. Note that Hettie
was born
in TN.

Martin V. Stapleton

Scott Co census: 1900 (Floyd #83) with second wife.
The 1900 census gives twochildren from 1st marriage, but there are
several
children living in other families of the age to be in this family.

541. Hop Lane

Cannot find them in 1910 Scott Co census.
Scott Co, VA census: 1900 (Floyd #23, m-10, 3-3 ch), 1920.
Orbin Lane identified some of his grandfather Hop's brothers and
sisters, and remembered his great-grandfather's name (John). He also
identified his grandmother as Melissa Sluss. Orbin said that Hop lived
inDungannon in 1900 and moved to Ft Blackmore about 1908.
It appears that Hop is the nickname of one of the children shown in
the census, but it is not apparent which it is. Or he could have been
living elsewhere when the 1880 censuswas taken.
Hop was killed when a tree fell on him while cutting timber. Orbin
remembered it was in 1929.

Malissa Sluss

Last name from Orbin Lane.
Scott Co census: 1930 (Dekalb #1-189, age 58, wd, mother-in-law with
Wrightly Gillenwater)
