Survivors include her husband, Gerald Atherton,Ohio; daughter and
son-in-law, Deborah and Dave Richards, Ohio; sons and
daughters-in-law, Gary Lee and Lynn Atherton, Frankie and Leslie
Atherton, Terry and Michelle Atherton, all of Ohio; 12 grandchildren;
and several nieces and nephews; sisters and brother-in-law, Mary
Christian, Ruth and Philip Crooke, all of Gate City, Va., Maxie Musik,
San Mateo, Fla.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob and Betty Gibson,
T.M. and Carol Gibson, Wichita, Kans., Fred andNancy Gibson, James

Kelly shot & killed William Flurnoy Quillen over family problems on
6/27/1936. Wm F Quillen wasadministrator of Preston L. Quillen's
(Kelly's uncle) estate and they had been many family disputes over the
estate. (Gate City Herald, 7/3/1936)
KellyQuillen was found not guilty of killing Wm F. Quillen on the
basis of self defense. In the trial, it was proved that W.F. Quillen
was going to the home ofKelly Quillen with the purpose of talking of
the estate. An argument occurred near the home and W.F. Quillen was
advised to stay away from the place butsaid he was going ahead
anyway. The defense claimed that when W.F. was shot,he was in a
sitting position but was in the act of rising and reaching for his
shoulder holster for his pistol. Instructions from the court were that
the defendant had a right to use whatever force from appearances of
serious body harm. W.F. Quillen was shot at least four times with a 38
caliber pistol. Death was instant. (Gate City Herald, 7/23/1936)
