Edwin Eugene Nickels, born October 6, 1921, Scott County, Virginia.
Graduated from Midway High School, in Scott County, Virginia, April
30, 1939.
Worked for Tennessee Eastman Company from January 2, 1940 until May
31, 1984.
Joining Eastman in its Acetate Yarn Division, Mr. Nickels served in
various
operating capacities before being assigned to the Tenite Plastics
Division.
Following Military Leave, he returned to Tenite Plastics and served as
a
Storekeeper in charge of the Division Maintenance Stores, later
he was assigned to Project Coordinating Department, and was appointed
a
Contracting Inspector. Next he was assigned to the Contracting
Department, as a Contracing Inspector, then he served in the General
Services Division and next the Shops & Sevices Division before being
assigned to the Engineering Division where he was serving as a Roofing
Maintenacne Coordinator forthe Company when he retired.
After graduating from high school, Mr. Nickels has taken a number of
self-improvement classes furnished by the State of Tennessee,
Department of Education, Divsion of Vocational Education, Trade and
Industrial Service as follows: Mechanical drawing & Blue Print
Reading, I, II,III and IV; Pipefitting Material & Practicess; Work
Simplification, Introduction to Electrical Equipment and Circuits,
part I; Welding Fundamentals; Supervising The Work of Others;
Principles of Industrial Supversion, I, II, III and IV; Construction
Safety and 40 hours of Chemistry. He attended and completed an
intesive course in the Design and Specification of Built-Up Roofing
systems, at the Built-Up Roofing System Institute, at Denver, CO. He
also hasattended many National Roofing Contractor's annual
conventions and exibits, held in different parts of
the counrty each year, and several Roofing Seminarsjointly sponsored
by the
National Bureau of Standards and National Roofing Contractor's
Association at
Gaithersburg, MD. He attended Carlisle's E.P.D.M.single ply
appliction and
inspection serminar, held at their plant in Carlisle, PA. From 1962 to
1984
when Ed retired he was in close contact with Eastman Kadak people
responsible
for both engineering and application roofing systems, and attended a
number of seminars at Kodak in Rochester, NY. In the late 60's Ed
surveyed all roofing systems at TEC and prepared a recommended 5-year
repair, specification and evaulation report and a recommended priority
schedule for the next five years plant wide, along with type reroofing
and repairs and the estimated costs for each year. He worked with
engineering in developing engineering and specification standards for
all TEC roofs. He has conducted roof repair and application semminars
for employees of Eastman in Kingsport, TN., Longview, TX, Batesville,
AR and Columbia, SC. Edwin E. Nickelsis a Navy veteran, served in
South Pacific during WWII.
He is of the Methodist faith, a member of Holston Masonic Lodge #559,

Harry C. Nickels, a WW II Army veteran. He served in Japan. Harry
was owner
or operator of shoes stores in TN and VA. Since he retired he has
been
working part time for one of the leading Men's Clothing Stores in
Bristol, VA
GATE CITY, Va. - Edward Everette Neeley Jr., a 71-year lifetime
resident of Scott County, Va., passed on Thursday (Dec. 28, 2000).
He served the people ofScott County as a teacher, a principal and a
school board administrator. These involvements include serving as
president of the District O Virginia Education Association and working
with the DARE and Adult Education programs of Scott County. He retired
from the school system in 1991. After 20 years of service in the Army
National Guard, he then retired as Chief Warrant Officer-W2.
Mr. Neeley is known for his big heart and his devotion to his family.
His kindness will always be remembered.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Everette and Polly Alley
Neeley and an infant sister.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Nickels Neeley, of the home; his
three daughters and two sons-in-law, Marsha and Charles Lawson and
Vickie and Kurt Lane, Gate City, Va., and Lisa Neeley, Charlotte,
N.C.; one granddaughter, Missie Lawson, Charlotte, N.C.; three
grandsons, Neeley Lawson, Los Angeles, Calif., Weston and Cade Lane,
Gate City, Va.
Other survivors include two brothers-in-law, W.B. Nickels andwife,
Myra, Johnson City and Edwin Nickels and wife, Violetta, Blountville;
one sister-in-law, Janice Fields and husband, Otis, Mount Carmel; and
several first cousins.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 30, 2000)at Scott
County Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturdayin the funeral home
chapel with the Rev. Dale Wyrick officiating. Music willbe provided
by Cathy Williams and Joel Jenkins.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 31,
2000) at Holston View Cemetery.
Pallbearers are W.B. Nickels, Otis Fields, Charles Buddy Gothard,
Lonnie Kern, Paul Bright, Joe Rusek, Mark Jenkins and Bobby Gay.
Honorary pallbearers includeJ.C. Miller, Bill Draper, Darrell
