2387. Clyda Joella Walker
>From the files of the Lake City Graphic - Thursday, April 8, 1948.
CLYDA JOELLA WALKER BAWDEN
Clyda Joella Walker was born in Greenville, Tennessee on November 11,
1881 and passed away at the home of her sister, Mrs. Sam Swearingen
(Grace Avala) at Des Moines on April 6, 1948.
When a small girl, she moved with her parents to Lake City, Iowa,
where she made her home with her parentsuntil 1900. Then the family
moved to South Dakota, where they lived for several years. Later the
same year she was married to Charley Bawden. After a short time there,
they returned to Lake City where they made their home for nearly 40
years. Her husband preceded her in death twelve years ago.
She leaves to mourn her passing, two sisters, Mrs. Floyd (Grace)
Fegley of Los Angeles, California and Mrs. Sam (Avala) Swearingen of
Des Moines, Iowa, three brothers, Roy of Lake City, Walter of Des
Moines and Bert of Lanesboro; also many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Squires funeral home Thursday, April
8, 1948, conducted by the Rev. L. L. Martin. Music was byMrs. Gladys
Martin and Mrs. Ramona Cottong. The pallbearers were Ernest Long,
Henry Sanders, Frank Cottong, Alvin Bigelow, Charles Overton and
Charles Richardson. Interment was in the Lake City cemetery.
2393. Major Lee "Buddy" Jr Walker
We have had no luck in tracing Major Lee, Jr. His father died when he
was only two and one-half years old. His mother, Dora remarried after
Major Lee, Sr.'s death. She married Fred Madden and it is possible
that they decided to call him Lee Madden. We have not found any proof
of this yet but are continuingto try to locate more clues - 3-16-97.
6-28-97 update - We have found that Major Lee Walker, Jr. went by the
nickname, Buddy Walker and only lived with hismother and step-father
until he was about 11 or twelve and then moved in with a relative in
an apartment above the Lake City Cafe. The relative was supposedly a
boxer. Not sure when he left the area or where he went..
