Retired coal miner, farmer.
He (Walker Lane) was convicted in July 1935 and sentenced to six years
in prison for maliciouswounding in the shooting of Charles Starnes,
school teacher, near Dungannon in June 1935. He said the shooting
culminated his efforts to break up allegedattentions of Starnes to
his sister-in-law Clarice Carter. (Gate City Herald)

Saturday (Oct. 14, 2000) at Ridgecrest Manor Nursing Home, Duffield,
Va.
Mr. Honeycutt was retired from United States Gypsum Company.
He was born June 14, 1916 in Scott County, Va., a son of the late Roy
and Mary Owens Honeycutt.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three
brothers, Willard, Conley, and Wilson Honeycutt.
Surviving arehis wife, Freddie Honeycutt, Dungannon, Va.;
sister-in-law, Hazel Duty, Dungannon, Va.; and several nieces and
nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Gate City Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Valley View Church,
Dungannon, Va., with the Rev. Wrightly Salling and the Rev. L.W. uRedu
Salling officiating.
Music will be provided by the Lee Smith Singers.
Burial will follow the service in the Corder Family Cemetery,
Dungannon, Va.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

as Melvin and Mary Owens Cox (Melvin Cox was her step-father.) 2

Blaine's marriage record gives her maiden name as Callie Cox.
Joel Flanary's report said she was the illegitimate daughter of Melvin
Cox and Virginia Owens. Given the circumstances in the census data,
this is questionable but may betrue?

will share withyou what i know as it was told to me as a child loll
well my granny always told me her father was melvin todd cox , and yes
james lane was her step dad .the story goes that after monnie and
o'connley were born james lane got intoa brawl with a man names james
broyles and a knife fight ensued , where uponjames lane cut mr
broyles guts out with a hawk bill knife he was then sent to prison in
richmond va .while james lane was in prison thats when my grandmother
mary jane owens had a affair with melvin cox and thus callie was born
when james lane returned home the took up where they left off and
proceded tohave ray, bessie (who was murdered) garland , mable lane
mary owens lane died in her sleep when callie was 12 years old . she
is buried in the brickey cemetary in fort blackmore. then james lane
married otellia gilliam and proceded to have several more kids
frederick, roy , gus, luaida dovie , elmer, junior , joseph i have a
copy of the newspaper article of the telling of the murder of bessie
lane its in the gate city archives gate city herald vol xii number 22
dated wed 8-12-1914 i have a seen a copy of the newspaper hanging in
the ramada inn in duffield .its in a frame on the wall close to the
receptiondesk .
